During their second game of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, England cricketer Joe Root created a new history for his nation by becoming the leading run-scorer for England in the ODI World Cup history.

It was the crucial game of the tournament between England and Bangladesh at Dharamsala. After Bangladesh chose to field first in that day-ODI match, England scored 364/9 in 50 overs. In reply, Bangladesh were all out for 227 runs in 48.2 overs as the defending champions won by 137 runs. It was England’s fourth-largest ODI World Cup victory (by runs) and their largest-ever ODI win (by runs) in Asia.

During the first innings of the match, while the opener Jonny Bairstow scored 52 runs in 59 balls (eight fours) and Dawid Malan scored 140 runs in 107 balls (16 fours and five sixes), the no.3 batter Joe Root scored 82 runs in 68 balls (eight fours and only six).

Before that match, Root (835 runs) was 62 runs behind the leading ODI World Cup run-scorer for England, Graham Gooch (897 runs in 21 innings). With his 82 runs against Bangladesh, Root surpassed Gooch and became the most run-scorer for England in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history.
