Australia is one of the toughest teams in any cricket format. In the T20I cricket, team Australia is popular for its aggressive cricket. Despite their strong nature, there were some outstanding opposition performances in which the Aussie challenge had failed results. 

Here, we are going through the records for the highest successful T20I chases against Australia.

Interestingly, team India has always proved as one of the most challenging teams for the Aussies. 

India hold all the top five records for the highest successful T20I run chases against Australia.

Target 187 runs: vs India at Hyderabad 2022

During the 2022 Hyderabad T20I, India successfully chased the 187-run target against Australia in 19.5 overs. Opener Cameron Green (52) and the no.6 batter Tim David’s (54) 50s helped the Aussies to manage the first innings total of 186/7 in 20 overs.

Although India lost their both openers inside the first four overs for 30 runs, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav batted strongly to seal a great win for the hosts. Kohli and Yadav had a 104-run partnership for the third wicket, while Kohli scored 63 runs and Yadav scored 69 runs. Hardik Pandya also had a powerful cameo with 25 not out in 16 balls.

India needed 11 runs in the final over, where Kohli smashed a six on the first ball before his dismissal on the next delivery, and Hardik finished the game with a four.


Target 195 runs: vs India at Sydney 2020

During the 2020 Sydney T20I, while Australia (194/5) set the 195 runs target against India, the visitors reached the target in 19.4 overs after losing four wickets. In the first innings, the captain and wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade scored 58 runs as an opener, while Steven Smith scored 46 runs.

In reply, openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul scored 52 and 30 runs, respectively, while the skipper Virat Kohli scored 40 runs in 24 balls and Hardik Pandya batted powerfully to score 42 not out in 22 balls.

While India needed 14 runs in the final over, Hardik finished the game comfortably with two sixers on the second and fourth balls.


Target 198 runs: vs India at Sydney 2016

During the 2016 Sydney T20I, India recorded the highest successful T20I chase against the hosts Australia by chasing the 198 runs target. Thanks to Shane Watson’s massive T20I hundred (124 not out in 71 balls; ten fours and six sixes), Australia scored 197/5 in 20 overs. However, it wasn’t enough for the hosts as India won the battle in the final-over thriller.

While opener Rohit Sharma scored 52 runs, Virat Kohli scored 50 runs and Suresh Raina remained not out in 49 runs. Also, Yuvraj Singh had a crucial cameo of 15 not out.

In the final over, India needed 17 runs to win. Yuvraj started the over against Andrew Tye with a four and sixer. While India required two more runs on the final ball, Raina hit a four to secure the match.  


Target 202 runs: vs India at Rajkot 2013

It was the first successful 200+ chase for any team against Australia in T20I cricket. During the 2013 Rajkot T20I, Australia scored 201/7 in 20 overs, where the opener Aaron Finch batted powerfully to score 89 runs in 52 balls.

In reply, India were losing regular wickets as they were battling on 100/4. Yuvraj Singh and skipper MS Dhoni then set up an unbroken 102 runs partnership for the fifth wicket, where the Player of the Match Yuvraj scored 77 not out in 35 balls with eight fours and five sixes, and Dhoni scored 24 not out off 21 balls.


Target 209 runs: vs India at Visakhapatnam 2023

During the 2023 Visakhapatnam T20I, India successfully chased the 209-run target against Australia. Although Josh Inglis equalled Australia’s fastest T20I century (110 in 50 balls), Ishan Kishan (58 off 39 balls) and new Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav (80 off 42 balls) batted strongly to deny a victory for Australia. India chased down the target in 19.5 overs as Sean Abbott delivered a no-ball on the final ball of the match, where India needed one run to win.
