James began his professional football career in 2006 with Envigado, a Colombian second division club with whom he was promoted to the Colombian first division in 2007. At the age of 14, he became the second-youngest Colombian player to play in a professional match, starting his first match on May 21, 2006. Banfield, an Argentine team, signed him in 2008. On 7 February 2009, he made his first-team debut, and on 27 February, he scored his first goal for the club, a long-range strike in a 3–1 win.
