Ligue 1 Team of the Season 2020-21

The Ligue 1 champion hasn’t been decided yet with just two match days left to play. This is kind of weird as Paris Saint-Germain usually wraps up the league by this time with their squad worth billions. However, it hasn’t been the case this season as Lille is on the top of the league, three points ahead of PSG with two games to play. They need four points from their last two games to seal their first league title in 10 years. PSG needs Lille to drop points in both games to win the league. There’s another tough fight going on for the Champions League qualification spot with Monaco and Lyon just one point apart.

So, which players have impressed in the Ligue 1 this season? Let’s take a look at the Ligue 1 team of the season.

The formation is a bit weird and an unbalanced 4-1-3-2, but the intention was to pick the players who have been most impressive in the French league.

Goalkeeper – Mike Maignan (Lille)

The French shot-stopper, Maignan has been miles better than any other goalkeeper in the league. He has been in tremendous form this season for title contenders Lille. He has conceded the fewest goals this season so far (22). He has started all games for Lille and has also kept 20 clean sheets (most clean sheets in Ligue 1). Lille have conceded the fewest goals in the league and Mike has definitely played his part with a lot of stunning saves.

Right-back – Fabien Centonze (Metz)

Metz have a good chance of finishing in the top 10 this season and Centonze has been among their best players this season. The defender has scored just one goal for Metz but he has been very solid defensively and deserves this spot in the list.

Centre-back – Jose Fonte (Lille)

The 37-year-old Portuguese defender has cemented his place in the starting lineup after a series of impressive performances. He has scored three goals this season and has also managed 29 tackles. He has 35 interceptions so far and has combined well with Sven Botman to form one of the best defenses in Ligue 1.

Centre-back – Marquinhos (PSG)

Marquinhos is a special player who always steps up in big games for the Parisians. He is a versatile player who can play as a centre-back as well as a defensive midfielder. He has appeared 23 times for PSG this season contributing to three goals.

Left-back – Reinildo (Lille)

Another Lille defender on our list, Reinildo has been rock solid for Lille this season. Despite no attacking contributions, the Mozambican has been impressive with his defensive contributions. He has a 71% dribble success rate and has 39 tackles so far in the league.

Midfielder – Marco Verratti (PSG)

The 28-year-old Italian is easily the best midfielder in the league and it wasn’t hard picking up a player for this position. Verratti has played 21 games for the Parisians and has bagged two assists. He has created 26 chances and provided 24 key passes.

Right-midfielder – Kylian Mbappe (PSG)

Another PSG player on our list, Mbappe has wreaked havoc in the league as usual. The 22-year-old Frenchman has scored 25 goals from 29 appearances this season. He has also completed 86 dribbles at a success rate of 49%. His inclusion in the list shouldn’t come by as a surprise for anyone.

Attacking midfielder – Memphis Depay (Lyon)

The Dutch forward will be a free agent next summer and has been linked with a move to Barcelona. He has scored 19 goals and bagged 10 assists for Lyon in what could be his last season. Apart from that, he has also created 100 chances and made 90 key passes in the league.

Left-midfielder – Karl Toko Ekambi (Lyon)

Another inclusion from Lyon, Toko Ekambi has been sensational for Lyon since joining from Villareal in 2020. He has scored 12 goals this season and managed six assists. He has also completed 59 dribbles.

Striker – Burak Yilmaz (Lille)

Our article would be incomplete without the inclusion of Burak Yilmaz. The 35-year-old Turkish international has found his mojo back and has scored 15 goals for Lille in their run for the Ligue 1 title. He has been crucial for Lile, helping them reach the top of the table, by coming up in big games, and has been on a different level this season.

Striker – Andy Delort (Montpellier)

The 29-year-old Algerian has good numbers this season for Montpellier this season. He has scored 14 goals and bagged nine assists for La Paillade this season.
