The 2022-23 Premier League season will be nothing like normal as the league is set to be halted midway in the month of November to accommodate the greatest football showpiece on earth, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Usually, the tournament is hosted in the summertime in the months of June and July but the extreme and unbearable heat in the middle east nation has forced FIFA’s decision to shift the event to a winter period. Hence, we have a stop-start league season this time out which is quite unique in the sense.
The fixture calendar for the new season has been drawn in line with the World Cup schedule. The 2022-23 season will begin on 5th August and will run normally till 12th November when it will take a pause. Eight days later, the World Cup will kick off in Qatar on 21st November with the final of the competition set to take place on 18th December. League action returns a week later on boxing day and concludes on 28th May. The Football Association or FA requested not having matches between the so-called big six in the Premier League in the final weekend to avoid a quick turnaround of games and injuries before the World Cup so their wish was granted.
The World Cup is one of the few major storylines surrounding the new Premier League season. Holders Manchester City and close challengers Liverpool have again made assurance of a two-horse race with two groundbreaking signings in Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez. Chelsea are now under new ownership by American businessman Todd Boehly and are hoping to carry forward the club’s legacy while their rivals Arsenal are desperate to earn a Champions football berth after getting close last season. Their North-London counterpart, Tottenham will pose a stiffer challenge as well with manager Antonio Conte able to assert his authority now. New era beckons for Manchester United with Erik Ten Haag tasked to reshape the club falling from its grace while the Saudi-led consortium at Newcastle United wishes to flex their muscle in transfer spending to be a new force to reckon with. West Ham and Leicester will be vying for European places. Three promoted sides in Fulham, Bournemouth and in the top-flight after 23 years, Nottingham Forest are not here just to make up the numbers.
The 2022-23 Premier League season begins on Friday, 5th August with Arsenal travelling to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace where they were humbled 3-0 in the past season. Also in the opening week, Liverpool travels to Fulham in a bid to replicate their improvising campaign last time out. Newcastle faces Nottingham to kick off their season of promise with new look Chelsea travel to the Goodison Park to face Everton also having changes in ownership. Both Manchester clubs’ season begins on Sunday, 7th August with the Red Devils welcoming Brighton at home and their neighbours facing a tricky fixture against West Ham at the London Stadium.
The first high voltage affair of the season will be on 13th August when Spurs visit the Stamford Bridge for a London derby against Chelsea. On the very next weekend, the season’s first North-West derby involving the two most successful clubs in English football Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Reds will taste the first Merseyside derby of the season at Everton on 3rd September the very same day when Manchester United takes on Arsenal. The first Manchester derby and the North-London derby both occur on the first day of October with City facing Liverpool in another potential title challenger fight two weeks later. The season ends on 28th May 2023.
