Top 5 FA cup third round upsets of the 21st century

Here are five of the biggest of the 21st century.

5. Burnley 1-0 Liverpool- January 18, 2005

Liverpool’s 2004/05 season is fondly remembered amongst Reds fans for their incredible comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul as they won a fifth Champions League title, but their early FA Cup exit to Burnley is often forgotten about.

Liverpool were heavy 2/5 favorites to see off the then-Championship club, while the Clarets were 9/1 outsiders to win. A comical own goal from Djimi Traore saw Burnley knock out a second-string Liverpool side whose manager, Rafa Benitez, clearly had his sights set on Champions League glory.

4. Manchester United 0-1 Leeds United - January 3,2010

These days only eight places separate Manchester United from Leeds in the Premier League table, but back in 2010 the odds were hugely stacked in Man United’s favor.

Before kick-off, Leeds were as big as 17/1 to pull off an unlikely win, while United were 2/5 to advance to the fourth round. Man United had the likes of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs on the pitch, but it was Jermaine Beckford’s 19th-minute goal that proved decisive for Leeds.

3. Crawley 3-0 Leeds United- January 10,2021

A decade later and Leeds were on the wrong side of an FA Cup third-round upset as Marcelo Bielsa’s side were taken apart by League Two’s Crawley.

Crawley started the game 62 league places below Leeds and subsequently had odds at 15/1 to win. Reality TV Star Mark Wright even got onto the pitch for Crawley for the final few minutes, just to rub salt into the wounds of the Premier League side.

2. Newport 2-1 Leicester- January 6,2019

League Two minnows Newport were 10/1 to beat Premier League Leicester heading into this third-round clash, but Newport took the lead through Jamille Matt just 10 minutes into the tie.

Leicester’s equalizer eight minutes from time saw Newport’s odds to win drift to 19/1, before Marc Albrighton’s handball in the box gave the Welsh club a chance to reclaim the lead in the 85th minute. Padraig Amond made no mistake from the spot and Leicester manager Claude Puel was sacked just a month later.

1. Fulham 1-2 Oldham United- January 6,2019

An unbelievable 200/1 bet came in from this game as League Two side Oldham traveled to Fulham with the odds hugely stacked in the Premier League clubs favor at 11/1 to win.

Denis Odoi put Fulham 1-0 up and one brave punter backed the Latics to comeback and win at 200/1. Oldham equalized in the 76th minute, before Aleksandar Mitrovic then missed a penalty six minutes from time. Callum Lang was Oldham’s hero in the 88th minute as he secured a famous win, which saw the 200/1 bet come in.
