A question that has been on the mind of many United fans since it happened was why did Bruno Fernandes pass up his chance to score his first hat trick for Manchester United against Istanbul Basaksehir in the UCL. The Portuguese magnifico scored his 20th goal for the Reds - hitting the mark faster than any other midfielder for the Red Devils- netting twice in a thrilling opening half-an-hour to put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side 2-0 up by half time.
When Marcus Rashford was brought down by Boli Bolingoli, the Istanbul defender and a spot-kick were awarded by the referee, many would have expected Bruno to step up and take it, just as he did against West Brom at the weekend – or in all the other matches since he has arrived. (He is the primary PK taker for the Red Devils). Instead, the 26-year-old gave the penalty to Rashford and our No.10 took his chances perfectly.
In the post-match setup, Fernandes explained what had happened there and how the team’s progress meant more to him than his own!
“Of course, every player wants to score a hat-trick, you know?” said Fernandes.
“But after the game [against West Brom] in the Premier League, I told Rashy he will take the next one. I remembered that.
“Also, Rashy is one of the top scorers in the Champions League [this season, with five] so I think it will be important for him to keep going there and taking that confidence.
“As I say, it doesn’t matter who takes the penalties, the most important [thing] is scoring. When the team scores, I score too.”
Instead, the highlight for Fernandes was his opening goal, which was a sweetly struck half-volley from outside the box.
“It was a really good goal,” he admitted. “I always say we need to be ready outside of the box to these kinds of situations or sometimes to stop the counter.
“This time was to shoot maybe next time I will have to fall and take a yellow card.”
Overall, Fernandes – who went off with about half an hour left – was satisfied with United’s performance, which puts them in a commanding position in their group.
“I think we played well,” he said. “We started the game with the right mentality – strong, intense. First half was important to get three points today.
“We’re in a good position but can’t relax”
