The 23-year-old Indian shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta opens up the first Indian quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics after finishing in fourth position in the men’s trap competition in the ongoing ISSF World Championships Shotgun Osijek 2022 in Croatia.

On Wednesday (28th September), Bhowneesh Mendiratta participated in the medal match of the men’s trap competition in the World Championships Shotgun 2022. He qualified for that medal round after finishing on top during the ranking match with an impressive score of 24/25.

While the top four teams of this event would earn the quota spots for the Paris 2024, Bhowneesh helped India to secure one of those spots by qualifying for the medal round with his excellent performance during the ranking match.

Earlier, Bhowneesh scored 121 and finished fourth in the qualification round to open up a place for the ranking match.

However, in the 35-shot medal match, Bhowneesh closely missed out to secure a medal for his country by scoring 13 out of the first 15 hits.

The 37-year-old USA shooter Derrick Mein won the gold medal in the men’s trap competition in this World Championships Shotgun. During the medal match, his score was 33/35. Great Britain’s Nathan Hales won the silver medal and Chinese Taipei’s Kun-Pi YANG won the bronze medal with their final scores of 31 and 23 respectively.

So, what does this mean?

As Bhowneesh Mendiratta finished in the fourth spot in the ISSF World Championships Shotgun Osijek 2022, India has booked one spot for the men’s trap event for the Paris 2024.

However, it doesn’t mean that Bhowneesh has booked his ticket for the men’s trap event for Paris 2024.

While the Indian team has now simply earned a spot for the men’s trap event for the next summer Olympics, India’s shooting federation National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) will later organise the national-level trials to finalise the shooter for this event for the next summer Olympics.

Who is Bhowneesh Mendiratta?

The 23-year-old shooter Bhowneesh was born in Faridabad on 30th June 1999. His latest world ranking in men’s trap event is 144.

During Junior Asian Championship 2019 at Doha, Bhowneesh won a silver medal in the men’s trap event.

In the ongoing calendar year, Bhowneesh was a member of the Indian team for the men’s trap team event in the ISSF World Cup 2022 in Changwon (South Korea), where the team won the silver medal.
