Sarvesh Kushare finally ended India’s 52-year-long wait for an Asian Games medal in the men’s high jump event, as he produced a strong fight to snatch a silver medal.
Both the top two high jumpers, Fu Chao-hsuan from Chinese Taipei and Sarvesh, successfully managed to jump the 2.25m mark and failed the 2.28m jump despite attempting three times each, but the Chinese Taipei athlete, who equalled his season-best record (2.25m), achieved the successful mark in his first attempt to snatch the gold medal. While Sarvesh was successful in jumping the 2.25m mark in his second attempt, he secured the silver medal. Woo Sang-hyeok from South Korea won the bronze medal with a jump of 2.22m.
The three-time Asian Games gold medalist and Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics gold medalist, Mutaz Barsham from Qatar, withdrew before the event due to an injury.
Sarvesh provided India’s fourth Asian Games medal in the men’s high jump, first since 1974. Ajit Singh Balla won the gold medal in the 1954 edition, while Bhim Singh won gold in 1966 and bronze in 1970.

Who is Sarvesh Kushare?
The 2019 South Asian Games gold medalist Sarvesh Kushare won silver medals at the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 and the Commonwealth Games 2026. In the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, he failed to reach the Final. In the World Athletics Championships 2025, he finished in sixth place.
