World Athletics Championships 2023: Men’s Javelin Throw – Neeraj Chopra settled the gold medal with his second throw

On the final day of the World Athletics Championships 2023 (August 27), India won the first gold medal in the Championship history. While India previously won one silver and one bronze medals in the World Athletics Championships (Anju Bobby George won a bronze in women’s long jump in 2003; Neeraj Chopra won a silver in men’s javelin throw in 2022), the latest historic gold medal made its World Championships medal tally to three.

Chopra was the favourite to win the gold medal. Although his first throw of the night was a foul, his second throw already set the historic tone for the country with 88.17 metres. It ultimately stayed as the medal-winning throw, while Chopra’s next throws reached 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m and 83.98m, respectively.

On the other hand, it was also a historic day for Pakistan as the silver medalist Arshad Nadeem brought Pakistan’s first medal at the World Athletics Championships.

In the final of the men’s javelin throw in the Budapest event, Nadeem had his season-best throw of 87.82m and it helped him to claim silver at the World Athletics Championships 2023.
