World Athletics Championships 2023: Men’s Shot Put – Gold medalist Ryan Crouser set a brave example

The world record holder Ryan Crouser competed in this Championship with two blood clots. Although his presence in the Championship was highly doubtful, the top-ranked athlete was unstoppable at Budapest as he dominated the men’s shot put final event on Saturday (19 August) night. The 30-year-old previous Championship Record holder (22.94m) bettered the record twice during that final event.

While Crouser’s second throw reached the mark of 22.98 meters, his last throw managed 23.51 meters. It was just .05 meters shorter than his own World Record of 23.56m, which he achieved in May 2023.

It was the USA’s first gold medal in the World Athletics Championships 2023. Crouser’s native Joe Kovacs, the second-ranked shot putter and two-time World Athletics Championships gold medallist, also brought a silver medal for the USA with his best throw of the night with 22.12m.

Italian Leonardo Fabbri set up his best-ever throw in the third round of that final event with 22.34 meters, which was enough for him to secure a silver medal for his country.

The third-ranked shot putter, New Zealander Tom Walsh, who won a gold medal in the World Athletics Championships 2017, closely missed a medal at Budapest as his best throw in the final was 22.05m.

Another USA shot putter, Payton Otterdahl, finished in the fifth position with his best throw of the night 21.86m.
