A total of 50 athletes from 28 nations participated in the men’s 20km race walk event. Japanese Koki Ikeda, who won the silver medals in the Summer Olympics 2020 and the previous World Athletics Championships (2022), started strongly in the Budapest race.

At the end of the first half of the men’s 20km walk, Ikeda had a handsome lead of 15 seconds. But at the end of the 15 km, the Japanese racewalker lost his lead to Spanish Martín. Ikeda ultimately managed the 15th place.

Álvaro Martín’s comments

According to Olympics.com, Martín said after winning the gold in Budapest, "I trusted myself and I saved my strength at the beginning, because I knew that when I attacked I had to leave. I had to attack and not look back."

(Next goal)

The Spanish racewalker is now eyeing the Olympics gold medal next year. He claimed, "The next goal is to win gold at the Olympics, but all I want to do right now is cry with joy. I'm going to enjoy this moment.”
