India added another weightlifting medal from the Commonwealth Games 2026, as Harjinder Kaur secured a silver medal in the women’s 69 kg event on Tuesday (28th July). It was the seventh medal for India from the Glasgow 2026 weightlifting competition.
Canadian Charlotte Simoneau set up the CWG records in women’s 69 kg in all events, snatch, clean & jerk, and total, with the successful lifts of 108 kg, 132 kg, and 240 kg, respectively. While the Canadian was strongly ahead of others, the Indian weightlifter put up a strong battle.
Harjinder Kaur secured silver after strong, successful lifts
In the snatch event, Harjinder lifted 96 kg and 99 kg before successfully lifting 101 kg to strongly settle the second position. Later in the clean & jerk event, her successful attempts were 120 kg, 123 kg, and 126 kg, respectively, as her total was 227 kg, securing India’s silver medal.
Australian youngster Nya Phebe Hayman (97 kg + 121 kg = 218 kg) closely beat Ketty Lent (97 kg + 120 kg = 217 kg) from Mauritius and Scot Madeline Rosher (97 kg + 117 kg = 214 kg) in the bronze medal battle.
Who is Harjinder Kaur?
Harjinder Kaur was born in 1996 in Mehas, near Nabha, in the Patiala district of Punjab. Although she was initially a kabaddi player, for which she reportedly cycled five kilometers daily to attend the training, she later took up weightlifting.
At the CWG 2022, Harjinder secured the bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg weightlifting event. She also won a silver medal in the 2021 Commonwealth Senior Championships (71 kg) and a bronze medal in the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships (69 kg).
