lowest totals in ICC Champions Trophy History

The ICC Champions Trophy is a tougher ODI competition for every team, as the tournament has never given a scope to come out from any little mistakes. Here, we are going through the lowest total records of the ICC Champions Trophy history.

Netherlands 86 vs Sri Lanka at Colombo (RPS) in 2002

It was the Netherlands' sixth ODI but first after the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996. After the hosts Sri Lanka chose to bat first in the Pool 4 encounter of the ICC Champions Trophy 2002, they scored 292/6, majorly thanks to the Player of the Match Marvan Atapattu for his century (101). In reply, the Netherlands were bundled out for only 86 runs. Only Tim de Leede (31) scored 20+ runs in that innings, while the legendary Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralidaran had the bowling figures of 5.3-2-15-4.

Zimbabwe 85 vs West Indies at Ahmedabad in 2006

It was the Qualifying round battle of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006, which was an official part of the tournament. Defending champions West Indies thrashed Zimbabwe in that one-sided game. Zimbabwe batted first but were all out for only 85 runs. Apart from captain Prosper Utseya (27), only the opener Tafadzwa Mufambisi (18) and Elton Chigumbura (10) reached double-digit scores in that innings. Jerome Taylor (2/19) and Dwayne Smith (2/14) picked up two wickets each, but Chris Gayle shined with three wickets as his bowling figures were 3.1-1-3-3. Player of the Match Gayle also scored 41 off 34 balls as West Indies reached the target in 14.2 overs after losing only the wicket of Gayle.

West Indies 80 vs Sri Lanka at Brabourne in 2006

It was also the Qualifying round battle of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006, and the defending champions West Indies were stunned by the Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Farveez Maharoof. Before the match, both teams had already booked their places for the Final rounds of the tournament, and their battle was only to decide the top and second places.

Sri Lankan pacers Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga provided a strong start as the Caribbeans were struggling at 13/3. Then, Farveez Maharoof didn’t give any opportunity to the defending champions as his six-fer crushed the West Indies side to 80 all out. Player of the Match Maharoof had the bowling figures of 9-2-14-6, while Vaas (2/6) and Malinga (2/26) got two wickets each. Among the West Indies batters, Wavell Hinds scored 28 runs, while skipper Brian Lara (13) and extras (17) were the other double-digit scorers.

Sri Lanka comfortably reached the target in 13.2 overs after losing only one wicket on the first ball of the innings.

Bangladesh 77 vs New Zealand at Colombo (SSC) in 2002

In Pool 1 of the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 clash, when New Zealand faced Bangladesh, the Blackcaps claimed a big win after thrashing the Asian side to the lowest total in tournament history at that time. After New Zealand scored 244/9, Bangladesh were bundled out for only 77 runs. While the Player of the Match Shane Bond bagged four wickets (4/21), Jacob Oram (2/32), Kyle Mills (2/13), and Daniel Vettori (2/10) scalped two wickets each. Among the Bangladesh batters, only Tushar Imran (20) reached the 20-run mark.

USA 65 vs Australia at Southampton in 2004

The inexperienced United States of America, who were playing their second ODI, had no answer against Australia, the most fierce team at that time. In that Pool A match of the 2004 edition, Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting chose to field first, and the Aussie fast bowlers had no mercy. Except for Steve Massiah (23), only the extras (14) contributed double-digit scores in that innings, as the USA recorded the lowest total in ICC Champions Trophy history with only 65 runs. Michael Kasprowicz (4/14) and Jason Gillespie (4/15) bagged four wickets each, and Kasprowicz won the Player of the Match award after Australia chased the tiny target in just 7.5 overs after losing only one wicket.
