We are less than a year and a half away from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, where the competition is set to return with the previous model of 14 participating teams. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has just recently stunned every cricket fan by reshaping the tournament model, as the cricket world is still in shock.
Although the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is still set to experience a 14-team tournament, it will be a completely different experience. While it was expected that some associate teams, at least two associate teams, would definitely compete in the main round of the tournament, that is now in question.
According to the newly revised format, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 will begin with the three lowest-seeded teams, which means that the qualified associate teams most probably start with this round, named Super Series, unless one of them becomes the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier champion.
The new format suggests that the main round or second round of the tournament will have 12 teams, divided into two groups with six teams each. At the end of the round-robin system, the top three teams from both groups will advance to the next round, along with the best of the fourth-placed teams, to make the next round, called the Super 7 stage, instead of the previously known Super 6.
In the Super 7, it will be a complete single round-robin, including each team facing their previous group stage teams, too, who have qualified for this stage. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals, where the first team will face the fourth-placed team, and the other game will be played between the second- and third-ranked teams. The winners of the semifinals will meet for the title.
Talking about the changes to the format for the tournament, the ICC stated, "The changes were introduced to create more meaningful contests, elevate competitive standards, strengthen the competitive structure of the event, and enhance the tournament experience for athletes and fans."

ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027: Complete Details
South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will jointly host the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 from October to November 2027. While the ICC Full Members, South Africa and Zimbabwe, both have directly qualified for the tournament as the hosts, the ICC Associate Namibia will have to play the entire qualifiers to earn qualification.
Apart from both the ICC Full Members, the other top eight ODI-ranked teams (record date will be confirmed soon) will also directly qualify for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. From the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, four more teams will qualify, while the champions will advance to Round 2 or the Group Stage directly without participating in Round 1 of the main tournament.
