Despite New Zealand's good fightback at chasing, hosts India comfortably won the first Semi-final at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. Indian veteran right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami was one of the big reasons for that comfortable win, where Shami recorded India's best bowling figures in the ODI World Cup history.

After India chose to bat first at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, they scored 397/4 in 50 overs. Apart from the strong opening batting performances by the captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer scored memorable centuries.

In reply, New Zealand lost both the openers in the first powerplay as Mohammed Shami was the damager.

Later, skipper Kane Williamson and in-form Daryl Mitchell scared the Indian team with their comfortable batting performances. Once again, Shami rescued the hosts by dismissing Williamson and fresh-batter Tom Latham in one over.

Although the centurion Daryl Mitchell tried his best with Glenn Phillips, India were totally under control in the game. While New Zealand were all out for 327 runs, India won that historic Semi-final by recording a 70-run victory. Shami also dismissed the centurion Daryl Mitchell for 134 runs.

Shami won the Player of the Match award for picking up the match-winning seven wickets. The Indian right-arm pacer finished the game with the bowling figures 9.5-0-57-7. Those were the best-ever bowling figures by an Indian bowler in the ODI World Cup history. He also became the first Indian bowler to pick up seven wickets in the Men's Cricket World Cup history.

Mohammed Shami broke Ashish Nehra’s ODI World Cup record

Ashish Nehra was the previous record holder for India in the list of best bowling figures in the ODI World Cup. During a group stage game against England in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, the left-arm pacer had the bowling figures 10-2-23-6.

On the other hand, Shami also became the first Asian bowler to claim a seven-wicket haul in an ODI World Cup match.

Shami also became the fifth bowler to record seven wickets in an ODI World Cup match.
