In the opening game of the crucial three-match ODI series (part of ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League) between the hosts Netherlands and England, the latest men’s cricket World Cup winners thrashed the home team with a record-breaking total.

In that recent Amstelveen ODI last Friday (17th June), the Netherlands chose to field first after winning the toss. England created a new world record with their first innings score of 498/4 in 50 overs, thanks to three centuries and one more fiery half-century.   

In reply, the Netherlands were all out after scoring 266 runs in 49.4 overs as the visitors won that series opener by 232 runs.  

Here we are discussing some of the key records and stats during the recent Netherlands vs England ODI match at Amstelveen.


  • ODI Captain with a joint-most golden duck

The English ODI captain scored a golden duck in this game, which was his fifth golden duck as an ODI captain. It is the joint-most golden duck by an ODI captain as Morgan equalled the record of five golden ducks by the former Australian captain Allan Border.  

  • Most ODI ducks for England

It was also Eoin Morgan’s 14th ODI duck for the England cricket team. He is now holding the record for most ODI ducks for the England cricket team.

  • Three players scored centuries in an ODI innings

During England’s record-breaking first innings, three batters scored centuries (Phil Salt 122, Dawid Malan 125 and Jos Buttler 162*). It was the third time when three batters completed centuries in an ODI innings. South Africa previously recorded this twice, vs West Indies (at Johannesburg on 18th January 2015) and vs India (at Wankhede on 25th October 2015).


  • Second fastest ODI century for England

Jos Buttler completed his 10th ODI century in just 47 balls. It was the second-fastest ODI century by an England batter. Buttler is also holding the record of England’s fastest ODI century with 46 balls against Pakistan at Dubai (DSC) on 20th November 2015.

  • Second fastest ODI 150

Jos Buttler further completed his 150 runs in that ODI by 65 balls. It was the second-fastest ODI 150 as the former South African cricketer AB de Villiers completed his 150 runs in 64 balls against West Indies in Sydney on 27th February 2015.

  • Jos Buttler recorded the highest individual score as an England wicketkeeper-batter

Jos Buttler’s 162 not out was the fourth-highest individual score as an England batter but the highest individual score as an England wicketkeeper-batter. The previous record as their wicket-keeper batter was 150 by Jos Buttler against West Indies at St George's on 27th February 2019.

  • Joint second fastest fifty in ODI history

Liam Livingstone’s 17-ball fifty was the joint second-fastest ODI half-century (along with former Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lankan Kusal Perera and New Zealand Martin Guptill). Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers is still holding the record for the fastest ODI fifty with 16 balls against West Indies at Johannesburg on 18th January 2015.


  • Highest ODI total as well as List A total

England scored 498/4 in 50 overs. It was the highest ODI total. The previous ODI record was 481/6 in 50 overs against Australia at Nottingham on 19th June 2018.   

Meanwhile, the 498/4 was also the highest total in List A cricket history. The previous highest List A total was 496/4 by Surrey against Gloucestershire at The Oval on 29th April 2007.  

  • Most sixes in an ODI innings

England smashed 26 sixes in the first innings of the game. It is the record number of sixes in an ODI innings. The previous most sixes in an ODI innings was 25 by England at Afghanistan at Manchester on 18th June 2019.


  • Most runs from boundaries in an ODI innings

The visiting side's English team collected 300 runs through boundaries (36 fours and 26 sixes). It is the record runs from boundaries in an ODI innings. The previous record was 290 runs by England vs Australia at Nottingham on 19th June 2018.

  • Second most expensive spinner in an ODI history

Dutch leg-spinner Philippe Boissevain had the bowling figures of 10-0-108-0. He became the first Dutch bowler to concede 100 runs in an ODI match as he managed the second most expensive bowling figures in an ODI innings by a spinner. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan is holding the record for most conceding runs in an ODI innings by a spinner with the bowling figures of 9-0-110-0 against England at Manchester on 18th June 2019.

Meanwhile, Philippe Boissevain’s bowling figures of 10-0-108-0 were also the fourth most expensive bowling figures in an ODI innings.
