The Sri Lanka U19 team started the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2026 with a strong and record-breaking performance against Japan U19.
After Japan chose to field first, Sri Lanka U19 scored 387/4 in 50 overs. Sri Lankan openers Dimantha Mahavithana and Viran Chamuditha both slammed centuries and had a record-breaking partnership of 328 runs for the first wicket. While Dimantha was dismissed for 115 off 125 balls with 11 fours, Viran scored a tournament record-breaking 192 off 143 balls with 26 fours and one six. Lankan captain Vimath Dinsara also scored a crucial 44 not out off 24 balls with one four and two sixes.
In reply, Japan U19 were restricted to 184/8 in 50 overs. The no.3 batter Hugo Kelly was their only batter to provide a strong response, with 101 not out in 162 balls with the help of six fours and one six.
The record partnership in Youth ODI
Sri Lankan openers Dimantha Mahavithana and Viran Chamuditha set a 328-run partnership for the first wicket.
It is the highest ever partnership for any wicket in the Youth ODI history. The previous record was a 303-run partnership between Dan Lawrence and Jack Burnham for England against Fiji during the 2016 U19 World Cup.
The highest score in U19 World Cup
Sri Lankan opener Viran Chamuditha scored 192 runs.
It is the highest individual score by a batter in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup history. The previous record was 191 by Sri Lankan cricketer Hasitha Boyagoda against Kenya U19 in 2018.
It is the second-highest individual score in the Youth ODI history. The record is 215 by Jorich Van Schalkwyk from South Africa against Zimbabwe in 2025.
