The BCCI has appointed the man from Digboi, Assam, as the new fielding coach for Team India. He has very big shoes to step into, as he will replace T Dilip, a man who was beloved by everyone. Subhadeep Ghosh is a seasoned veteran, and he will look to make Team India the best fielding side in the world. The first assignment will be the India Tour of Sri Lanka.

From Assam to Team India
Subhadeep Ghosh is from Digboi, Assam, which is a state in the Northeast part of India. He is a master technician, and this appointment from the BCCI signals that they would not look to superstar names for the coaching jobs but those people who have practiced domestically and are ready for this job. Subhadeep Ghosh will travel to Sri Lanka as his first assignment as a fielding coach in the 2-match Test series.
He is known as Joy in domestic cricket, which means happiness. He was formerly a right-handed batter who also bowled off spin. He represented Assam in Ranji trophy from 1994 to 2005. He played 34 domestic matches, and in those matches the one thing that stood out was his commitment to fielding and his agility as compared to the other players.
After his playing career was over, Subhadeep Ghosh transitioned to coaching, and he has been grinding hard. He was at the National Cricket Academy for 7 years, where he worked very closely with the former Indian head coach, Rahul Dravid. He made sure that all the camps at the NCA had standard catching practices, and there should be dynamic movement protocols, meaning the fielders should be dynamic and they should be agile.
He has previous coaching experience at the highest level, as he was the fielding coach for the Indian Women’s Cricket Team during the 2021 Australia tour. He also coached the 2024Under-19 Winning World Cup Team. This was the natural progression, and he will have an opportunity to work with the likes of Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, etc.
Subhadeep Ghosh is a coach who believes in preparation first.
He is a man who believes in biomechanics and the ground efficiency of the fielders, and he likes to position the fielders tactically. There are players in the current Indian team who were in the Under 19 team, and Subhadeep Ghosh is familiar with their skills. He has experience in both red ball and white ball, and at a crucial time in Indian cricket, his expertise will be helpful. India will play a lot of cricket till the 2027 World Cup, and Subhadeep Ghosh will be tested with a trial by fire.
