A disclaimer beforehand, we will only be considering the stats from the test Matches and the ODI Matches that they have captained for Australia and the names on this list are some of the biggest names in cricketing History and they have led Australia to glorious heights in cricket and have made then one of the most successful cricket teams in the world. Australia has been fortunate to have great captains almost all the time so the transition is smooth from one leader to the next.

Before we get into the list I just want to tell you that the captains who have captained Australia in both test cricket and ODIs will be given a higher priority in my list so with all that being said let’s get to the list.


Ricky Ponting – 48 Test Wins and 165 ODI Wins as Captain)


There is no doubt as to who is the most successful captain In the history of Australian cricket and it is the great Ricky Ponting because he has the best win % out of anybody and the most combined wins in both Test cricket and ODIs are concerned. In the 77 Test Matches that he captained Australia between 2004-2010 he won 48 off those which gives him a win % of 62.33. In ODIs he was the captain of Australia for 230 ODIs between 2002-2012 and he won 165 matches giving him a win % of 76.14 and he won 2 back to back ODI World Cups in 2003 and 2007.


Allan Border – 32 Test wins and 107 ODI Wins as captain


The second most successful captain in the history of Australian cricket is one of the greatest in Allan Border as he was the best captain before Ricky Ponting took that spot. Allan Border captained Australia in 93 Test Matches out of which he won 32 test matches and drawing 38 and in the ODI format he captained Australia for 178 ODIs and he won 107 off those matches which gives him a win % of 61.42 and in total he has won 139 Matches for Australia as captain.


Steve Waugh – 41 Test Wins and 67 ODI Wins as captain


At number 3 is another all time great of Australian cricket and it is none other than Steve Waugh. He has won 41 Test Matches out or the 57 he has captained which gives him a win % of 71.92 and in the 106 ODIs he captained for Australia he won 67 of those Matches giving him a win % of 65.23 and a total matches won at 108 Matches won as captain for Australia. One of the best captains for Australia ever.


Michael Clarke – 24 Test Wins and 50 ODI Wins as captain


At number 4 is another great captain of Australia and his name is the World Cup winning captain in Michael Clarke. He was a fearless captain who was not afraid to take the tough decisions on the pitch. He has captained Australia in 47 Test Matches and won 24 out of those and in the ODI format he has captained Australia in 74 ODIs out of which he has won 50 ODIs which gives him a win % of 70.42 and total matches won as captain of Australia at 74 Matches won. He was also the captain of Australia during the 2014 Phil Hughes death and handled the team beautifully.


Mark Taylor – 26 Test Wins and 36 ODI Wins as captain


The fifth and last member of our list is Mark Taylor who completes this list of the 5 most successful Australian captains in history. Mark Taylor Captained Australia in 50 Test Matches and he won 26 out of those and in the ODI format he was captain for 67 ODI Matches winning 36 out of those giving him a total wins at 62 Match ajna for Australia as captain.
