The 34-year-old Indian right-handed batter Virat Kohli broke another top record in ODI cricket. During his outstanding batting performance against Sri Lanka at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Kohli set a new record for the most 1000+ ODI runs in a calendar year after surpassing legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s record.

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli came to bat in the 33rd game of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 on the third ball of the match as the skipper Rohit Sharma was bowled for four runs. Kohli had an 189-run partnership for the second wicket with the opening batter Shubman Gill.

While Gill scored run-a-ball 92 runs (11 fours and two sixes), Kohli scored 88 runs in 94 balls with the help of 11 fours. Their batting performances guided the hosts India to set up the first innings total of 357/8 in 50 overs.

Most 1000+ ODI runs in a calendar year: Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record


Before the match, Kohli was 34 runs away to complete his 1000 ODI runs in 2023. By completing his 1000 ODI runs, the right-handed batter Kohli recorded his eighth 1000+ ODI runs in a calendar year.

Previously, Sachin Tendulkar had the record for most 1000+ ODI runs in a calendar year seven times. The right-handed Indian legendary batter scored 1000+ ODI runs in 1994 (1089 runs), 1996 (1611 runs), 1997 (1011 runs), 1998 (1894 runs), 2000 (1328 runs), 2003 (1141 runs) and 2007 (1425 runs).

Kohli has now scored 1054 runs in 2023. Previously, the Indian right-handed batter scored 1000+ ODI runs in 2011 (1381 runs), 2012 (1026 runs), 2013 (1268 runs), 2014 (1054 runs), 2017 (1460 runs), 2018 (1202 runs), and 2019 (1377 runs).
