Ivan Veras’s spectacular goal right before the final whistle was too little too late for Aizawl FC as they lost 2-1 to last year’s ISL winners Hyderabad FC in their first group stage game of the Super Cup 2023. The Mizoram-based side tried their best to hold off Nizams but a Joel Chianese 17th-minute opener and a Joao Victor penalty conversion early in the second half took the game away from them. Aizawl now faces an uphill task to recover themselves with another gigantic battle against Odisha FC to come in the second game before concluding the group stages against East Bengal. The I-League sides are clearly not the favorites to enter the semi-finals of the competition but they will not want to exit it without registering at least a point to their name. Cup competitions are also meant to produce upsets so there are no barriers for the mountainous club to think of a miracle on Thursday.
Odisha FC played an even game with East Bengal and the 1-1 result was a reflection of the balance in the game. Despite having better chances in the first half, the Juggernauts fell behind in the 38th minute when center-back Narender Gahlot gave the ball away for Mobashir Rahman to finish with only Amrinder Singh to beat. Clifford Miranda’s side responded well, equalizing through Nadha Kumar Sekar in the 73rd minute. Both teams spurned good opportunities to win the game and will be forced to do it all in their second game. Odisha FC will wish to see the face of victory against Aizawl FC who collected only one win out of nine games and conceded 15 in that period, keeping only one clean sheet. The ISL side themselves are without a victory since a 3-1 success over NorthEast United back in February. With a victory here, Odisha FC will move to the top of the group pending the second game of the evening.
