Moisés Caicedo Chelsea midfielder FPL injury return

Moisés Caicedo is set to return for Chelsea after the international break, with the midfielder potentially in line to start against Bournemouth. Chelsea struggled noticeably without the Ecuadorian, which could see him immediately return to the starting XI if he is fully fit.

However, does Caicedo's return make him an attractive Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option at £5.3m?

Moisés Caicedo FPL Appeal After Injury Return

From an FPL perspective, Caicedo's biggest attraction is his potential to deliver defensive contribution points. As a defensive midfielder who regularly makes tackles, interceptions and recoveries, he has a strong route to points even when he does not contribute directly to goals.

There is also the possibility of occasional attacking returns. Caicedo registered three goals and one assist last season, which is a decent return for his position but certainly not enough to make him an attacking FPL target.

His £5.3m price, however, changes the equation. At that cost, managers do not necessarily need regular attacking returns from Caicedo to justify owning him. If he can consistently play enough minutes to collect appearance points while adding defensive contribution points, he could provide a reliable baseline.

For managers willing to gamble, Caicedo could arguably be worth a punt simply for the possibility of that standard four-point return at such a cheap price.

Caicedo's Minutes Are Still a Concern

The biggest issue for FPL managers is uncertainty over his fitness. Although Caicedo is expected to return after the international break, there are still questions over whether he will be ready to play a full 90 minutes against Bournemouth.

Even if he starts, there is no guarantee that he will be given enough minutes to consistently deliver the defensive contribution points that make him interesting at £5.3m.

That makes his potential ownership something of a gamble. FPL managers looking for guaranteed starters may prefer to wait until there is clearer evidence that Caicedo is fully fit and capable of playing substantial minutes.

How Will Xabi Alonso Use Caicedo?

Another major question is how new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso will use Caicedo.

While Caicedo has shown that he can contribute going forward, his primary value has traditionally come from his defensive work. Alonso's tactical system could potentially give him more attacking freedom, but there is currently no clear indication of exactly how that role will look.

If Caicedo is encouraged to get further forward, his attacking potential could become more appealing. If Alonso keeps him primarily focused on defensive duties, his FPL appeal will depend heavily on defensive contribution points and regular minutes.

Should You Pick Caicedo in FPL?

For now, our advice would be to skip Caicedo. The combination of fitness uncertainty, potentially limited minutes and questions over his role under Alonso makes him too risky to select immediately.

However, Caicedo is absolutely worth monitoring. At just £5.3m, he does not need spectacular attacking numbers to become a useful FPL asset.

If he starts regularly and can consistently produce the standard four-point return through minutes played and defensive contribution points, Caicedo could develop into a genuine bargain over the long run.

For now, though, it is better to watch rather than buy.
