CHN-W vs HAI-W Match Preview

China began their 2023 Women’s World Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Denmark by conceding a late goal from Amalie Vangsgaard. The Asian champions registered equal shots on target and created some chances but failed to add the finishing touch to it. The defence did a commendable job to neutralize the threat from the Danish team to some extent which will play as some motivation to the team. However, their opening-day defeat put a dent to those plans of qualifying for the knockouts in each of their last six appearances in the Women’s World Cup.  They have to beat Haiti now to stay in contention as facing Euro winners England in the final match will be a difficult test regardless. China have also failed to beat any CONCACAF sides ever in the tournament, losing their last three and failing to score in each of the last five meetings. An unwanted record to carry in the game where Haiti will unleash their gem in Melchie Dumornay. Ranked 14th in the world Shui Qingxia’s team cannot underestimate the newcomers based on FIFA rankings considering their resilient display against England in their tournament opener.

Inspired by Dumornay, Haiti caused plenty of problems going forward against England but it was their discipline that almost snatched a result in the opener. The Euro winners lacked top names in critical areas on the pitch for injuries yet still fielded a star-studded starting eleven. So, the fearless performance from Nicolas Delepine's side facing one of the best sides in the world was admiring. Taking into account they lost star defender Jennyfer Limage at the half-hour mark with an ACL injury which has ruled her out of the tournament. In the end, Georgia Stanway’s penalty which was retaken after a world-class save from goalkeeper Kerly Theus separated the side. Haiti now wishes to do the same against China albeit playing for a positive result this time. For that, they have to improve defensively having conceded a goal in each of their last eight matches. Knowing the other team is also coming off a defeat and they need to win to avoid exiting the competition early, this could turn out to be a memorable clash for any of them.
