EBFC vs HFC Match Preview
Stephen Constantine’s men played out a 1-1 draw with Odisha FC despite taking the lead in the match in the 38th minute and going close twice through forward Jake Jervis to double it. East Bengal, along with most other sides, complained about the difficult situation they had to face to prepare and travel for Super Cup matches but they could not do the same for their opening result in the group stages. A win would have been a comfort zone for the Torch Bearers who now have to take three points in the second group game against Hyderabad FC. The Kolkata giants have not won a single meeting while facing the Nizams and if the record continues on Thursday, they will depart from the Super Cup. A loss in this clash will add up to the disappointment of their ISL season with the board bound to feel more pressure from the fans in the coming days. A point will keep East Bengal alive in the contest although victory should be on the agenda to build proper momentum in the tournament they reached the final in 2018.
Hyderabad FC have almost set a foot in the semifinals of the Hero Super Cup 2023 with a convincing 2-1 win over Aizawl FC in the first group match. Manolo Marquez’s side dominated the entirety of the game and could have scored more than Joel Chianese’s strike and Joao Victor’s goal from the penalty spot. A late stunning goal from Ivan Veras did not ruffle any feathers but snatched the clean sheet the Nizams wanted for a perfect show. With the other game ending in a draw, the 2021-22 ISL champions have destiny in their hands to qualify for the knockouts of the Super Cup. They face a fellow ISL side in East Bengal in the second match having not conceded in any of the last three games against them and scoring eight goals in that time. This is the first meeting between the sides outside their league. A victory will be enough for Hyderabad FC to firm their hold on top of the table. They may even qualify without even playing the final game in the group if Aizawl plays out a draw against Odisha FC in the other match.
