The premium defender category has always been one of the biggest talking points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and the 2026-27 season is no different. While expensive defenders can deliver consistent clean sheets, attacking returns and bonus points, not every premium-priced option offers the same value.
Here's an expert's opinion on the most expensive defenders in the game and whether they're worth the investment.
1. Gabriel (Arsenal, £8.0M)
Gabriel being the most expensive defender in FPL 2026-27 is barely a surprise after his outstanding performances during Arsenal's Premier League title-winning campaign last season.
Arsenal possessed arguably the strongest defensive unit in the league, making their defenders among the safest bets for regular clean sheets. That defensive solidity alone makes Gabriel an attractive fantasy asset, but his attacking threat takes him to another level.
The Brazilian center-back has consistently been one of the Premier League's biggest aerial threats from set pieces, regularly finding himself in goal-scoring positions from corners and free kicks. Those extra attacking returns significantly increase his fantasy appeal.
On top of that, Gabriel showcased another side of his game during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, displaying an excellent passing range and the ability to create chances from deep. If that translates into more assists for Arsenal this season, his fantasy ceiling becomes even higher.
Considering Arsenal's defensive reliability, goal threat, and growing creative influence, Gabriel is arguably the standout must-have defender in FPL despite his hefty £8.0M price tag.
2. Jurrien Timber (Arsenal, £6.5M)
If managers cannot stretch to Gabriel, Jurrien Timber looks like the next best Arsenal defensive option and arguably one of the best defenders in the game overall.
The biggest attraction is, once again, Arsenal's elite defense, which should provide plenty of clean-sheet opportunities throughout the campaign.
Unlike many central defenders, Timber also offers excellent attacking potential thanks to his ability to drive forward, overlap, and contribute in the final third. His versatility makes him capable of producing both assists and bonus points.
The only significant concern is his injury record. If Timber can stay fit throughout the season, he has every chance of becoming one of the best-value premium defenders in FPL.
3. Nico O'Reilly (Manchester City, £6.5M)
There is no doubting Nico O'Reilly's quality, but at £6.5M, he represents one of the biggest risks among premium defenders.
The uncertainty stems from Manchester City's managerial change, with Enzo Maresca now in charge. Under v, O'Reilly enjoyed plenty of attacking freedom and was even deployed in advanced midfield positions on several occasions.
Whether Maresca continues to use him in a similarly attacking role remains unknown. If O'Reilly is asked to play a more conventional defensive role, much of his fantasy appeal could disappear.
Until managers have a clearer picture of his tactical role, £6.5M feels like a considerable gamble, making him a wait-and-see option rather than an immediate buy.
4. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool, £6.5M)
Virgil van Dijk remains one of football's greatest defenders, but from an FPL perspective, he looks significantly overpriced at £6.5M.
Now 35 years old, the Liverpool captain is naturally past his peak years, making further improvement highly unlikely while a gradual decline becomes increasingly possible.
Liverpool has also endured an underwhelming transfer window so far, and their defense appears weaker following Ibrahima Konaté's move to Real Madrid. That only reduces confidence in Liverpool matching the clean-sheet numbers required to justify Van Dijk's premium price.
While Van Dijk still offers an aerial threat from set pieces, there are simply better-value premium defenders available elsewhere.
Verdict: As things stand, Gabriel is comfortably the standout premium defender for FPL 2026-27, with Timber offering an excellent alternative. O'Reilly remains a high-risk gamble due to tactical uncertainty, while Van Dijk appears overpriced and is currently one of the easier premium defenders to avoid.
