We are here with another article in our FPL Beginners Guide series, this time focusing on How Do Price Changes Work & What's the New Predictor Tool. Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is about far more than simply picking the best players. One of the biggest factors that separates experienced managers from beginners is understanding how player prices work. Throughout the season, prices fluctuate based on transfer activity, and making smart moves at the right time can help you build a squad worth significantly more than the initial £100.0m budget.
For the 2026/27 Fantasy Premier League season, FPL has also introduced a brand-new Price Change Predictor tool. It gives managers official insights into which players are most likely to rise or fall in price, making it easier than ever to stay ahead of your mini-league rivals.
Here's everything beginners need to know.
Why Do Player Prices Change in FPL?
Player prices in Fantasy Premier League are driven by one simple factor: manager transfers.
When thousands of managers transfer a player into their teams, that player's price becomes eligible to increase. Likewise, if a player is heavily transferred out, their value can decrease.
A player's price can:
Rise by £0.1m per day if they are one of the most popular transfer targets.
Fall by £0.1m per day if they are among the most sold players.
Historically, a player's total movement has generally been limited to £0.3m during a single Gameweek, although daily changes depend entirely on transfer activity across the game.
In short, the transfer market determines player value throughout the season.
When Do FPL Price Changes Happen?
Price updates take place overnight UK time, with changes processed at 00:00 UK time.
This means managers who delay making transfers may wake up to discover:
Their transfer target has become more expensive.
One of their own players has dropped in value.
A planned move is suddenly no longer affordable.
Timing your transfers is therefore an important part of long-term FPL strategy.
Why Team Value Matters
Every FPL manager starts the season with a budget of £100.0m.
As prices rise and fall, your overall squad value changes too.
Managers who consistently buy players before they rise in price can gradually increase their team value, giving themselves extra spending power later in the season when premium assets become essential.
On the other hand, repeatedly holding players who lose value can reduce your team budget below £100.0m, making it more difficult to afford elite players.
Although chasing every price rise isn't always the smartest football decision, protecting your team value over a 38-game season can provide a significant advantage.
Understanding Selling Price
One area that often confuses new managers is the difference between purchase price, current price, and selling price.
When viewing your squad on the Transfers page, the value shown beside your player is your selling price, not necessarily the player's current market value.
FPL only allows managers to keep half of any price profit, rounded down to the nearest £0.1m.
Here are some examples:
Buy a player for £5.0m.
If they rise to £5.1m, you can still only sell for £5.0m.
If they rise to £5.3m, your selling price becomes £5.1m.
If they rise to £5.4m, you can sell for £5.2m.
Meanwhile, if a player drops below the price you paid, you lose the full amount.
The List View on the Transfers page clearly displays:
PP – Purchase Price
CP – Current Price
SP – Selling Price
Checking these values regularly helps managers understand exactly how much budget they have available for future transfers.
Monitor Transfer Trends Throughout the Season
Successful FPL managers rarely make transfer decisions in isolation.
Watching the transfer market allows you to identify:
Players attracting huge numbers of transfers in.
Players being heavily sold.
Potential price rises before they happen.
Players at risk of dropping overnight.
Previously, many managers relied on unofficial prediction websites. That changes this season thanks to Fantasy Premier League's new official tool.
Introducing the New FPL Price Change Predictor
For the 2026/27 campaign, Fantasy Premier League has launched its own Price Change Predictor, using official FPL transfer data.
The tool tracks transfer activity for every player and estimates who is most likely to rise or fall in price before the next overnight update.
It's designed to help managers make informed transfer decisions before prices change.
It's worth noting that player prices remain locked until the Gameweek 1 deadline on 21 August at 18:30 BST, so the Predictor becomes relevant only after the opening deadline has passed.
How Does the Price Change Predictor Work?
The new feature displays every player's progress towards a potential price increase or decrease as a percentage.
Some of its most useful features include:
Updated every 15 minutes using official FPL data.
Players exceeding 100% are expected to cross the threshold for a price rise or fall at the next overnight update.
Colour-coded indicators such as "Very Likely to Rise" and "Likely to Drop" make trends easy to understand.
Future versions will also include a Predicted Progress percentage after an initial calibration period.
However, the Predictor is not a guarantee.
For example, a player could show 105% progress towards a price rise at 23:45 UK time, but a late wave of transfers out before midnight could push them back below the threshold, meaning their price stays unchanged.
Easy Filters Make Planning Transfers Simpler
The new Predictor also offers several useful filtering options.
Managers can sort players by:
Most likely to rise.
Most likely to fall.
Players already in their squad.
Their Watchlist.
All available players.
In addition, each player's profile page will display their current price-change status, while team selection and transfer screens will include views showing how your own squad is progressing towards potential price movements.
Final Thoughts
Mastering player prices is one of the quickest ways for new Fantasy Premier League managers to improve. Understanding when prices change, how selling values work, and why team value matters can prevent costly mistakes over the course of the season.
The addition of the official Price Change Predictor makes this process even easier. By checking the tool regularly, monitoring transfer trends, and acting before overnight price changes occur, FPL managers can protect their budget, maximise squad value, and gain an important edge over rivals throughout the 2026/27 campaign.
