GER vs ENG UEFA Nations League 2022-23 Match Preview

Die Mannschaft had control over proceedings for most parts of the game in their Nations League opener away at Italy but failed to convert their chances in a dismal draw. The Italians were a much-changed side from their defeat in Finalissima with some earning their first caps. Though Germany enjoyed more of the ball and took more shots than their counterpart, they had to scramble for the equaliser three minutes after going behind through a close-range finish from Lorenzo Pellegrini. Joshua Kimmich probably was the standout performer in the evening that provided little and he got the goal for his reward. Flick’s team lacked a focal point in their attack with Hansi Flick using Timo Werner over kai Havertz for his runs-in behind but he was nullified in Italy’s deep defence. Germany’s unbeaten streak though remained intact with a goal scored in each of the games Flick has managed. The last time they lost and failed to score was the 2-0 defeat to their next opposition resulting in the elimination from the Euros last summer. That game against England was the last one for Joachim Low before the ex-Bayern coach took over. The Three Lions stand in their way again despite being wounded and the proposition is there to seek revenge to get back to winning ways. Germany’s strong record at home could also work the trick in this historical matchup. It by any means won’t be easy.

Gareth Southgate’s men knew the calibre of oppositions they were to face next so a positive result from the first game was necessary. The 1-0 defeat to Hungary albeit a soft call for Dominick Szoboszlai’s penalty made England no favour in their start for the preparation for the World cup in Qatar. England lacked any cutting edge in their attack or ability to strangle Hungary’s counters causing their first defeat in this fixture on away soil after 60 years, staying unbeaten in 15 prior meetings. The Three Lion's run of scoring in last 14 games also came to a halt. Adding it to the similar kind of disgusted reception from the home support at Puskas Arena, it was a day to forget. The heat was also to blame according to Southgate. One thing is sure the manager needs to put his A squad against Germany to stop deteriorating further in the competition despite the tight schedule in front of them. Their performance last summer where they got their first victory over the Germans in a major competition at Wembley serves as the ultimate inspiration before they face them again. It is a much-changed and lethal German team this time out so they could hardly put a foot wrong. However, England have flourished on their travels to Germany with two wins from three since the turn of the century and only two losses in the last five meets in all competitions.

Ikay Gundogan, Jamal Musiala and David Raum are wishing to get into the starting eleven after making substitute appearances in Bologna. Upfront, Kai Havertz is tipped to start ahead of Timo Werner.

Leicester’s James Justin earned his first cap for the Three Lions on Saturday but was withdrawn at half-time picking up a calf injury. GER vs ENG UEFA Nations League 2022-23 Head to Head

Wembley went wild when Raheem Sterling opened the scoring in the second half followed by Harry Kane breaking his duck at the Euros in the 2-0 win for the finalists over Germany to finally keep aside their age and hold hoodoo against the opposition at the place. This was one memorable win under Southgate as the team built on their good composition. Germany’s last win and a goal in this fixture came in a 1-0 win in a friendly back in 2017 when Lukas Podolski scored it in his farewell international game.
