It was another outing to forget for Mumbai City in the AFC Champions League suffering a 6-0 loss in the colossal tie against Al-Hilal. The Islanders managed to restrict the competition’s runners-up from last season to just a goal until the 67th minute and also stung the palms of opposition keeper Al-Owais through but then the floodgates opened up. That hammering meant Mumbai City are pointless after three group games with none scored and 11 conceded. However, they will not want their sour result at the continental stage to affect domestically. The Shield holders are the only side besides the top two, FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant, yet to lose a game in the ongoing ISL season. They won the last league outing 2-1 in a heated tie against Kerala Blasters which saw midfielder Van Nieff receiving a straight red and a three-match suspension. While center-back Rostyn Griffiths have been handed a one-match ban. Maintaining the winning form will help Des Buckingham’s side climb to the top of the standings. But no clean sheets so far this campaign will be a worry for the home side of the next clash.
Hyderabad FC could look into the opposition’s defensive vulnerability to change their fortunes around but they are infested with their own problems. The Nizams sit bottom of their table having lost all three games so far this season including losing the bottom two battle against Chennaiyin FC in the last match. While the side created several chances to score in their first home game of the season, they ultimately fell short in the 1-0 defeat. Nikhil Poojary’s clearance off the line helped by the post and his hand to some extent saved Hyderabad FC from further embarrassment but still failed to score for the second straight game. Thangboi Singto’s team are feeling the heat of the post-Manolo Marquez era and the squad is going through a transition this summer. The impact is so huge that when Hyderabad FC met Mumbai City FC last season, it was a battle for the league shied rather than the former struggling to enter among the top six. So, last year’s ISL trophy winners are fearing for the worst as they travel to Mumbai Football Arena having also lost the only other meeting there in 2019.
