NEUFC vs CFC Match Preview
Even after giving a commendable fight to Shield winners Mumbai City FC and equalizing through a spectacular strike from star kid Pathib Gogoi, NorthEast United suffered a 2-1 defeat. A first-half double from Jorge Peyeyra Diaz gave the away side the victory but it was a performance the Highlanders could feel good about after an excellent period in the Durand Cup. Forgetting the devils of the past ISL season, NorthEast United will be more confident of better results this time and not allowing a sequence of defeats again. With that in mind, they would like to take total points against Chennaiyin FC in their second consecutive home game of the new season. This clash has been a goal fest recently including the Super Cup game which ended 4-2 in the favour of Marina Machans. Chennaiyin FC have not suffered a loss in the previous eight meetings and won 7-3 in the last one at Guwahati. This will be a worry for Benali’s side who wants to repeat their victory in this fixture in 2019 when a certain Bartholomew Ogbeche scored the late winner for the Highlanders.
Like NorthEast United after making notable changes to the squad in the summer, Chennaiyin FC would not have liked to open their ISL campaign with a defeat. However, facing a new-look Odisha FC side filled with league winners and directed by a successful coach in Sergio Lobera, they had to leave Kalinga Stadium empty-handed. Jerry Mawihmingthanga and Diego Mauricio ensured a 2-0 victory for the home side. It was not that the Marina Machans did not turn up on the occasions but they will want to improve in the coming games. Although Chennaiyin FC have dominated the latest encounter against the Highlanders, there will be more reason to take them lightly. While Connor Shields or substitute Jordan Murray did not find the back of the net in the opener, the pair will be hungry to get one in this match. Owen Coyle’s side will be back at home to face ISL trophy defender Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the next match so are wishing for a positive result to take to that pivotal encounter.
