NOE vs JFC Match Preview

Although NorthEast United states winless for seven games in the ISL, their progress this season cannot be denied as they hug the last playoff spot with 12 points earned from the first 12 matches. Compare it to the last campaign where they finished dead last with just one win and only five points earned in total. The reason for the change has been head coach Juan Pedro Benali who recently was given a contract extension. The club also ended their merry-go-round of manager appointments to put the trust in a man they believe will take them forward. The Highlanders made an instant success since the Spaniard’s appointment, reaching the semi-finals of the Durand Cup in August last year. A feat they will want to repeat now in another cup competition, the Kalinga Super Cup this time. NorthEast reached the last four the previous time in the competition as well but it will be a difficult task to take the top spot with a side like Kerala Blasters in the group. Benali’s men will at least want to start the Super Cup 2024 with a win, against Jamshedpur FC, to reward their coach and also break the barren run.

While NorthEast locked down their head coach for the future, Jamshedpur FC parted ways with their think tank Scott Cooper after a crushing 4-1 loss to Odisha FC in their final ISL game before the Asian Cup break. The Men of Steels sits 10th on the table with just nine points earned from 12 matches and only two wins secured, both coming against the last boys Hyderabad FC. For a change of air, Khalid Jamil has been appointed in the hot seat to help the side improve in the second half of the season. Before Jamshedpur FC gets in the hustle for the ISL restarting in February, they will have the Super Cup to compete with Khalid Jamil to use this competition to implement his philosophy. No better way to kick off his era against his former ISL side NorthEast United whom he took to the league playoffs in 2021. Getting a victory in this reunion will be essential for his present side who will be confident of taking on the Tuskers in the next game before the final group match against Shillong Lajong. Winning the group might not be possible for Jamshedpur FC but they will have hope for the rest of the ISL season and in their new manager with a strong display in Bhubaneshwar.
