Losing the first two games of the season, a 4-0 defeat to Mohun Bagan Super Giant at home and Bashundhara Kings 3-2 in Bangladesh, Odisha FC made a remarkable turnaround in their maiden AFC Cup campaign to be in good position to qualify for the knockouts of the competition. The Juggernauts won the next three fixtures in the group stages beating Maldivian outfit Maziya twice and fellow ISL side Mohun Bagan 5-2 in the reverse fixture to go within a point close of Bashundhara Kings in the first place. While the five-game winning run in all competition was halted by Mohun Bagan in the ISL meeting last week coming from 2-0 down at half-time to draw 2-2, Sergio Lobera’s men will be optimistic about getting their job at their stadium where they have only lost once.
Only a victory will assure Odisha FC moving out of the group stages but Bashundhara Kings have a much easier task with a draw in the final match at this stage enough for them to progress. With two heavyweight ISL sides and a tricky Maziya team, whom they lost 3-1 in the AFC Cup opener, very few would have bet the Kings to come out top of the group. Yet they face the scenario now by beating Odisha FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their home and drawing 2-2 in the other game with the Mariners incidentally at the Kalinga Stadium itself. They trailed for consecutive games in the competition when Maziya scored within 10 minutes of the penultimate game giving their qualification hopes a jerk. However, the Kings showed their elite mentality and fighting spirit to win the game by scoring twice in the last 10 minutes of the match.
