Chelsea have added another exciting attacking weapon to their squad, with Morgan Rogers joining the Blues from Aston Villa in a British-record £117 million transfer. The move reunites Rogers with former Manchester City academy teammate Cole Palmer, giving new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso two of England's brightest young attacking stars to work with.
With both players now available in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), managers face an interesting dilemma: should you spend £9.5m on Cole Palmer or save £2m by picking Morgan Rogers at £7.5m?
Cole Palmer — £9.5m
There is little debate over who is the better footballer at his best. Cole Palmer has already established himself as one of the Premier League's elite attacking players and, when fully fit, is capable of producing huge FPL returns.
Palmer's best Premier League season at Chelsea saw him score 15 goals and provide eight assists, demonstrating his ability to combine goalscoring with creativity. His importance to Chelsea has also been reflected in his exceptional numbers since joining the club, including a remarkable 39 Premier League goal involvements during the 2024 calendar year.
The biggest advantage Palmer possesses from an FPL perspective is his role. He is not simply another attacking midfielder competing for goals and assists. When fit and firing, Palmer is one of Chelsea's primary creative and goalscoring outlets.
More importantly, he is also Chelsea's penalty taker, giving him an additional route to points that Rogers does not currently possess. Penalty duties can be extremely valuable in FPL, particularly for an attacking player already capable of producing goals from open play.
However, there is one major concern heading into 2026/27: Palmer's availability.
The Chelsea star has struggled with injuries and consistency over the past year, making his fitness one of the biggest questions surrounding his FPL prospects. His quality is unquestionable, but FPL managers need players who actually make it onto the pitch and complete matches consistently.
Morgan Rogers — £7.5m
Morgan Rogers represents the more intriguing value option.
His £117m move from Aston Villa makes him the most expensive British player in football history. The fact that Chelsea were willing to make such a massive investment underlines just how highly the club and Alonso rate him.
Rogers also has the added benefit of already having a strong relationship with Palmer. The pair have known each other since their teenage years and played together at Manchester City's academy, making their reunion at Stamford Bridge an intriguing subplot to Chelsea's new-look attack.
From an FPL perspective, Rogers' biggest attraction is his £7.5m price tag. That is £2m cheaper than Palmer, allowing managers to strengthen another position while still owning a player with significant attacking potential.
His best season at Aston Villa saw Rogers score 10 goals and register eight assists. Those numbers are obviously inferior to Palmer's peak output, but the bigger picture becomes much more interesting when the last two seasons are considered.
Palmer vs Rogers: The Last Two Seasons
Over the last two seasons, the numbers paint a surprising picture:
- Cole Palmer — 63 games, 25 goals, 9 assists, 34 goal contributions
- Morgan Rogers — 74 games, 18 goals, 16 assists, 34 goal contributions
Both players have produced exactly 34 goal contributions, despite reaching that figure in very different ways.
Palmer has scored seven more goals, while Rogers has provided seven more assists. However, what stands out most is the number of games played. Rogers has featured 11 more times than Palmer across the two-season period.
That availability is particularly important for FPL managers.
Palmer has been the main man at Chelsea and has played in a world-class attacking side, whereas Rogers initially had to establish himself in an Aston Villa team whose attack was led by Ollie Watkins. Yet Rogers has still managed to match Palmer's total goal contributions while playing 11 additional games.
Ultimately, even the best player in the world cannot score FPL points from the bench.
Rogers or Palmer: Who Should You Pick?
Cole Palmer is undoubtedly the better player. If both players are fully fit and playing consistently, Palmer should be the preferred FPL asset. Alonso is also likely to build Chelsea's attack around him, given his quality and importance to the team.
However, that "if" is extremely important.
Palmer's FPL value depends heavily on whether he can finally overcome his injury problems and return to the level that made him one of the league's biggest stars. If those issues persist, Rogers could potentially emerge as the new main man in Chelsea's attack.
For that reason, Morgan Rogers is the better pick initially.
At £7.5m, he offers a £2m saving while bringing proven Premier League production, attacking quality and, most importantly, a stronger recent availability record. He should provide at least a decent level of attacking returns while giving managers greater flexibility elsewhere in their squads.
If Palmer subsequently proves that he can consistently play full games, stays fit and returns to his best, the decision becomes much easier. Even at £2m more, Palmer would then be worth the investment because a fit and firing Palmer is one of the Premier League's best players, and his penalty-taking duties provide another major FPL advantage.
Final verdict
Start with Morgan Rogers at £7.5m, but keep a close eye on Cole Palmer. If Palmer's fitness and form return, upgrading to the £9.5m Chelsea superstar could be one of the best moves an FPL manager makes.
