Grouped alongside Slovakia, Ukraine and Belgium, almost no one predicted Romania to top it yet they produced the miracle to qualify for their first knockout stage of a major tournament in 24 years. All teams accumulated the same points for the first time in Euro history with Eduard Iordanescu’s side edging ahead on goals scored. After thrashing Ukraine 3-0 in their tournament opener, the 2-0 loss to Belgium took some steam off the side but the 1-1 draw from Razvan Marin’s penalty to cut off Slovakia’s in the final group game did the trick. Romania would have wished to play an opponent of similar quality in the last 16, however, the Netherlands will cross their road after finishing third in Group D. Their only win in this fixture came at home in 2007 in Euro qualifiers with three draws among nine losses. The record does not sound inspiring but the present Romanian team can beat the odds to stay in the competition for at least one more round.
At this very stage, the Netherlands bowed out of the tournament in the last Euros with a 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic and a similar situation stands in their way in 2024. The Dutch struggled for consistency in the group stage starting with a 2-1 comeback win against Poland. The goalless draw against France secured their place in the knockouts but the 3-2 loss to Austria in the final group game showed the erosion. Despite coming back twice from behind, there was no answer for Marcel Sabitzer's strike that led Ralf Rangnick's side to top Group D. The team dropped to third with the loss but still Ronald Koeman managed to avoid a top side in the first knockout round of his first major tournament with the nation. However, Romania is not to be taken lightly for any reason. The Netherlands will not face any of Belgium, Spain, Germany and Portugal in the quarterfinal should they qualify but even a rematch against Austria is not something they will worry about.
