SWI-W vs NED-W Match Preview

Switzerland thought they will go on to rescue another point in the tournament when Ramona Bachmann curled in the equalizer into the empty net following a howler from keeper Linhadl moments after Fridolina Rolfo gave Sweden the lead. It was not to be as 19-year-old Hanna Bennison stepped onto the pitch to score a stunner from outside of the box ten minutes from time to give the Swedes their first win of the tournament. The defeat meant Switzerland are winless in the last six games including the 2-2 draw against Portugal in their first game of this Euros even after going two goals up inside ten minutes. Moreover, they sit rock bottom in the table level in points and on goal difference with Portugal. But they have a small chance to make it into the quarterfinals in only their second appearance in the Euro finals. Though, it is down to a lot of permutations. First of all, Switzerland have to overturn their disastrous winless run to seek a first win in the tournament over the Dutch and hope Sweden, in second, avoids defeat against Portugal. If the Swedes failed to win their game and Switzerland wins their fixture, then qualification will be determined by various other factors. In that case, all of them will finish on four points. Head to Head record or goal difference will come to the fore to figure out who qualified for the last eight.

Injuries and Covid problem has hampered the holder’s campaign in Euro 2022 so far but they have managed to obtain the result to be in contention to escape the group stages. Netherlands know they have a task to complete in putting out the Swiss flame to confirm a spot in the last eight. The grit and determination were shown by the Dutch when they refused to lose heart after Portugal came back into the game down by two goals. Damaris Egurrola and Van der Gragt scored from corners putting the orange shirt on the brink of qualification but Carole Costa from the spot and Diana Silva levelled it up stunningly, coming from behind for the second game running. However, Netherlands showed the desire to turn the game in their favour that Switzerland solely lacked. Arsenal’s Van de Donk with an eye-catching winner scripted the tale of the game. Concerns remain for Mark Patterson to improve the team’s performance to win it comfortably this time around but should be happy with the spirit in the side. They have to avoid defeat on Sunday to seal qualification and extend their unbeaten run in the competition. Netherlands also wish to top their group if results from the other game go in their favor to face either Iceland, Belgium or Italy from Group D.

SWI-W vs NED-W Team News

The Swiss were hampered by problems of their own with most of the players missing the Sweden game because of a gastroenteritis outbreak in the squad. They should be back in contention for Sunday. Despite that, Nils Nielsen is unlikely to make any changes to the eleven that started the last game. Ramona Bachmann is wishing to add to her tally after scoring a spectacular equalizer for her side to open her account in the tournament.

Vivianne Miedema’s status for this game is uncertain as she continues her isolation for contracting Covid-19. The Arsenal forward missed the win over Portugal. Center-back Aniek Nouwen missed the previous game for the Netherlands after injuring her ankle against Sweden but is back in contention for the last group game. The Chelsea player resumed training with her teammate. Another boost for the Dutch is Jackie Groenen has recovered from Covid. She too missed the thriller against Portugal and is set to get her place back in the midfield. Daphne van Domselaar will continue in goal with first choice keeper Sari Veenendaal ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury.
