The 2025 Summer transfer window in Europe was nothing less than a rollercoaster ride. Premier League clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea all went on to spend hundreds of millions. Liverpool especially went on to have one of the best windows in their history, recruiting top-class stars such as Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak, Milos Kerkez, and Florian Wirtz. Clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also had significant revenues as well. Despite several blockbuster transfers, there were some moves that were close but never happened in the end. Let us now look at those transfers that ultimately didn't go through.
5 summer transfer window moves that didn't go through
Marc Guéhi to Liverpool
Marc Guéhi to Liverpool waa the closest transfer in this list that was close to happening. In fact, the Crystal Palace defender had even completed his medical and even recorded his farewell video for the club. However, the inability of Crystal Palace to find a suitable replacement and manager Oliver Glasner threatening to quit if Guéhi was sold without a proper replacement ultimately led to Palace cancelling his dream move to Liverpool. As per latest transfer news, Liverpool may bid for Guehi again when the January transfer window opens.
Rodrygo to Arsenal
Rodrygo leaving Real Madrid was one of the most high-profile transfer rumours in the 2025 summer transfer window. The Brazilian winger had failed to win over new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, who preferred Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr as his attacking forwards. Although the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City were also linked to him, Arsenal were seen by most as favourites for his signature. However, Mikel Arteta's side eventually decided to sign both Noni Madueke from Chelsea and Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace with their remaining transfer funds.
Savinho to Tottenham
In what was one of the most shocking news towards the end of the transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly willing to pay over £43m for Manchester City winger Savinho. The Brazilian was believed to be keen on joining them as well, with Thomas Frank's side guaranteeing him a permanent place in the starting lineup. City were apparently okay in sanctioning the sale as well, until Pep Guardiola reportedly stepped in and personally requested the City board to not sell him.
Emiliano Martínez to Manchester United
Manchester United has had nothing less than a nightmare situation when it came to their goalkeeping situation. Both Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır proved themselves to be incapable of being United's undisputed goalkeeping option. In fact, Onana is about to join Turkish side Trabzonpor on loan at the time of this writing. Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa was heavily discussed as a transfer target by United, but his age and high salary demands were seen as a concern. This eventually led to young goalkeeper Senne Lammens being signed by the Red Devils from Belgian side Royal Antwerp.
Fermin Lopez to Chelsea
Fermin Lopez and Chelsea was a shocking transfer news that made headlines during the final days of the 2025 Summer Transfer window. In fact, there was a phase when most people thought that Chelsea would be eventually signing the talented young Spaniard. However, Barcelona were reluctant to sell him and substantially increased their asking price to keep Chelsea away. Additionally, the player wasn't too keen on leaving Barcelona as well and thus Chelsea had no other choice but to leave empty handed.
