The post-Erik ten Hag era at Ajax was a disappointing one with the side surrendering their four-year hold on the Eredivisie title to arch-rivals Feyenoord. Not only that, the Amsterdam club also missed out on Champions League football finishing the season in third. As a result, they entered the Europa League playoff spot. It was the first time in 13 years that Ajax will not enjoy Europe’s premier competition. To pull the team back to its best, Maurice Steijn was appointed as the head coach for the 2023/24 season.
Ajax begin the new season of revival at home against Heracles on 12th August 2023. They then go on to face Excelsior, Fortuna Sittard and FC Twente in three straight-away matches. Their next game at the Johan Cruyff Arena is against the holders and rivals Feyenoord in the season’s first De Klassieker on September 3rd, 2023. The return derby at De Kuip is in next year on April 7. The first game against PSV away at Eindhoven is on 29th October 2023 with the reverse fixture also on 4th February 2024. The final match of the league season for Ajax is on the travel again, against Vitesse on 19th May 2024.
