Arsenal made it two wins from two in the 2026/27 Premier League season after beating Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park. The defending champions were far from their best in a cagey contest, but Bukayo Saka produced the decisive moment in the second half, finishing from Riccardo Calafiori's excellent assist in the 59th minute.

Making his Villa debut following his £30m move from Parma, Suzuki produced a promising performance. He had little chance of stopping Saka's goal and impressed with his distribution, although he did misjudge an early corner.
Matty Cash – 6/10
Cash was dependable defensively and handled Christos Tzolis effectively. His performance helped limit Arsenal's threat down the left, with Tzolis eventually replaced at half-time.
Pau Torres – 6/10
Torres helped Villa keep Arsenal relatively quiet for much of the match. He defended well before the Gunners finally found their breakthrough after the interval.
Victor Lindelöf – 6/10
The Swedish defender worked diligently to contain Arsenal's attack and remained composed throughout. He has quickly established himself as a reliable option for Unai Emery.
Ian Maatsen – 6/10
Maatsen had a difficult assignment against Saka and was beaten to the ball during the build-up to the decisive goal. However, his overall defensive contribution was solid.
Boubacar Kamara – 8/10
One of Villa's better performers. Kamara provided an important defensive shield in midfield and helped frustrate Arsenal for long periods.

Barkley worked hard to keep Villa's midfield moving and contributed to their improved showing compared with the Brighton defeat.
John McGinn – 6/10
The Villa captain displayed his usual energy and aggression. He constantly attempted to disrupt Arsenal's rhythm but could not provide the attacking spark required.
Emi Buendia – 6/10
Buendia came closest to scoring for Villa when his long-range effort clipped the crossbar. He was one of the hosts' more creative outlets but lacked the final touch.

The highly rated teenager showed plenty of confidence against the reigning champions. His low cross in the first half was particularly threatening.

Jackson showed flashes of the qualities that persuaded Villa to spend £65m on him. He worked hard and offered movement, although he was unable to find the breakthrough.

Raya was reliable between the posts and handled Villa's limited attacking threat comfortably. His passing range was another positive.

White did not produce as many overlapping runs as usual but performed his defensive duties effectively as Arsenal recorded another clean sheet.
Cristhian Mosquera – 7/10
Mosquera produced another solid display alongside Gabriel. He helped Arsenal keep Jackson under control before being forced off through injury.

Gabriel led Arsenal's backline confidently and helped keep Villa from creating clear chances. His defensive positioning was important in the second half.
Riccardo Calafiori – 8/10
Arsenal's standout performer. Calafiori was adventurous going forward and delivered the decisive assist, sliding a superb cross into Saka's path for the winner.
Declan Rice – 7/10
Rice covered significant ground and offered Arsenal control in midfield. He also made several important interceptions and remained a constant defensive presence.
Myles Lewis-Skelly – 7/10
The youngster continued his impressive start to the season. He looked comfortable under pressure and showed maturity in possession.
Martin Ødegaard – 6/10
Ødegaard produced some neat passes but struggled to make a major attacking impact. He also came close with a second-half free-kick.
Bukayo Saka – 8/10
Saka was Arsenal's match-winner. The winger scored the only goal and was involved in most of Arsenal's best attacking moments, making him the obvious difference-maker.
Christos Tzolis – 4/10
It was a frustrating evening for Tzolis. Despite working hard, he struggled to produce quality in the final third and was substituted at half-time.
Kai Havertz – 6/10
Havertz had a relatively quiet game but provided Arsenal with a useful focal point and helped the team retain possession in attacking areas.
