Barcelona vs PSG Champions League

The matchup between Barcelona and PSG in Champions League history has brought up some breathtaking moments which has been etched in the memory forever. Ever since the two clashed on the European stage in 2013, the ingredients of a fiery rivalry between the two were set up. The first meeting ended in a 2-2 draw at Parc des Princes which was a quarterfinal encounter first-leg with the return leg at Camp Nou finishing at 1-1 with Barcelona going through on away goals.

The Catalan giants have taken up more victories in this fixture but the Ligue 1 giants also register some huge wins. At times, the matches played between the sides have been so intense and full of goals that those have been regarded as the best games played not only in the Champions League but also in world football. For that, both sides have managed to keep just one clean sheet each in 12 encounters so far. At least, two or more goals were scored in nine matches.

Highest goal-scorer: Neymar (7 goals)

A player who has played for both clubs, Neymar leads the scoring chart in this fixture with seven goals. However, all of those strikes came while wearing the Barcelona shirt. The Brazilian did not face the Spanish giants after leaving the club either. Neymar also scored in the first-ever meeting against PSG in 2014 that too away as well as scoring in the reverse fixture at home.

The current Al-Hilal player’s goal came at crucial moments in games, none more important than his late brace in the famous ‘Remontada’ in 2017. His performance that night ultimately resulted in a move to the Parisian club that summer with a world-record transfer fee.

Barcelona were dominant in this fixture in the last two seasons before 2017 so it was a desperate time for PSG to bring themselves on level ground. Led by Unai Emery, the Parisians dreamt of making strides in the Champions League and produced a spectacular performance on the evening of Valentine’s Day. No love was lost as PSG thrashed the visitors in the Round of 16 first leg in the French capital with Angel Di Maria unleashing two stunning strikes with Julian Draxler and Edinson Cavani getting a goal a piece. It was one of the biggest wins for PSG in the contest while one of the heaviest losses suffered by Barcelona.

If PSG felt they had done enough to kill off the game in the first leg, they were proven wrong only weeks later in one of the best football games played ever. No team managed to overturn a four-goal deficit in Champions League history before but Barcelona did it against all odds. Putting pressure from the first minute and stretching PSG’s defence, Barcelona went three goals up inside 50 minutes in front of an electrifying atmosphere. The rattled guests did find a way to ripple the net in the 62nd minute to give them the advantage in the tie on away goals. However, the home side unleashed a startling comeback with Neymar the orchestrator. At last, it was from his cross that Sergi Roberto scored the winner to spark crazy scenes all around.
