Leverkusen experienced a complete turnaround of their fortunes when Xabi Alonso took charge of the club in October 2022. The club was involved in a shocking relegation dogfight back then. The Bayern Munich legend managed to guide them to a Europa Conference League spot in a remarkable fashion. Die Werkself also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, narrowly losing to Roma, in the previous season.

With Alonso fending off overseas interest to stay at the club for the next season, Leverkusen wishes for further progress in the period of 2023/24. The Spaniard will be concerned with the start of the schedule as his side will take on Monchengladbach in the Rhine Derby and his ex-club Bayern Munich in the first four games after a tough season-opener against RB Leipzig on Saturday, 19 August 2023.

As is taking on Wolfsburg, Freiburg, Hoffenheim and Union Berlin in four straight matches from October to November 2023. Reverse games of the same meetings are in March-April 2024. Leverkusen will also play another Rhine Derby with Koln in October this year. The team will also face Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in the final five games, both away matches. Augsburg at home, the Bayer Arena, is the season's concluding game on May 18, 2024.
