Belgium FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

After suffering elimination from the group stage in Qatar, Belgium will be desperate to make a long run in North America as they buckle up for the biggest World Cup in history. Now past their era of golden generation, they hope to create new memories in the 2026 edition with a new crop of emerging talents. The Red Devils are making their 15th appearance in the competition and the one that does not put the weight of expectation on them this time. That might help Rudi Garcia's men as they could express the potential in their squad more freely having drawn with Egypt, Iran and New Zealand in Group G of the .

Belgium FIFA World Cup History

Belgium have a good piece of history on the FIFA World Cup stage having been one of the teams to have debuted in the inaugural edition of the competition back in 1930. They have missed just seven World Cups since, with their 2026 qualification a third straight appearance at the finals. The Red Devils were considered nothing more than adding numbers to the competition in early years even though they finished fourth in 1986 in Mexico. Their real influence in the competition came with the golden generation after returning to the stage in 2014 following a two edition absence.

Belgium achieved their best finish in the 2018 World Cup in Russia when they ended as bronze medalist defeating England after a historical run to the semifinal in the competition, eliminating record winners Brazil in the last-eight but beaten narrowly by eventual winners France. That was the best the side ever did in any major competition with some of the best talents in the world but they began to crumble slowly following the tournament. The 2022 World Cup showed the true decline of a fascinating era of the nation's history as they were eliminated from the group stages of the competition for the fourth time in their history, managing just one win.

Belgium Qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026

Put in a tricky group with Wales and North Macedonia, Belgium did not buckle under pressure as they secured the top spot and qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America directly. They finished two points better than Wales who finished in the playoffs. They defeated Craig Bellamy's side twice in highly entertaining affairs but failed to win any of the matches against North Macedonia and had an odd 1-1 draw against Kazakhstan. Overall, the Red Devils were immaculate in their qualification journey scoring an eye catching 29 goals in eight games with goals spread throughout the team. Kevin De Bruyne ended as the highest goalscorer with six followed by Jeremy Doku's five. Meanwhile, Alexis Saelemaekers provided the most assists with four.

Midfielders: Kevin De Bruyne (Napoli), Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa), Amadou Onana (Aston Villa), Axel Witsel (Girona FC), Nicolas Raskin (Rangers FC), Hans Vanaken (Club Brugge)

Head Coach: Rudi Garcia

Only Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Axel Witsel, who makes a return after breaking his international retirement, remain from the core member of the golden generation for Belgium while Thomas Meunier and Youri Tielemans also contributing a lot to the team that was placed at the top of the FIFA rankings for several years. Now, a different set of talents are set to take over with the next group of stars like Jérémy Doku, Hans Vanaken, Charles De Ketelaere, Amadou Onana etc taking up the mantle. 10 players in the squad will make their debut in the World Cup including the highly demanded center-back Zeno Debast, Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens and exciting left-back Maxim De Cuyper. Arthur Theatre was called up for Belgium in the 2022 World Cup squad but was not offered a single minute in the tournament. Strasbourg's Diego Morreira has been recalled to the squad while the most fascinating story lies with Lille starlet Matias Fernandez-Pardo who switched his allegiance to Spain last year but reversed his decision just days before the squad announcement to commit to the Red Devils immediately. Mika Godts, Loïs Openda, Mandela Keita and Romeo Lavia miss out on squad selection while Mike Penders replaces Matz Sels of Nottingham Forest.

Strengths of Belgium Football Team

Very few teams could match the talent and quality Belgium possess. Having the old guards of the golden generation blend with the future stars of the team, the Red Devils has a deadly combo to use in the tournament. Their squad depth will also be helpful for a long run in the tournament with them being stacked at the midfield and explosive dynamic options on the flanks. Even if not required for tournament football, there are a series of excellent goalkeepers in the rank too with the future after Thibaut Courtois, who returned to the squad after left out of Euro 2024 under a different management, looking safe. In Kevin De Bruyne, they still posses one of the best playmakers of the current generation while Jeremy Doku has taken his game to a different level after adding finishing to his asset of fascinating pace, balance, dribbling and chance creation. The youthfulness of the side with the inclusion of hungry talents like Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Diego Moreira, and Nicolas Raskin brings a lot of energy to the squad. The spine of the team looks strong and it will play a key factor for them.

Weaknesses of Belgium Football Team

While Belgium enters the 2026 World Cup with an explosive attack and elite individual quality, the defence line is a massive question mark for Rudi Garcia’s side. When other areas in the pitch thrives with quality, talent and depth, the back four especially the central defence lacks those aspects severely. While the expected starting pair of Theatre and Debate is talented, they lack the chemistry, solidity and imposing figure compared to other top sides around. Their relative inexperience at this level is also a major concern. The lack of proper number nine other than Romelu Lukaku is a big issue considering the 33 year old, well past his prime, has played just seven games all season due to a series of injury problems. With out of form Lois Openda not selected, Leandro Trossard and De Ketelaere will be deployed in that role but they are not natural goalscorers. Over reliance on an aging De Bruyne without an elite playmaker could clog the side.

Key player: Jeremy Doku

While Belgium will depend on De Bruyne to create the big moments with his world class ability, there is no question that frightening winger Jeremy Doku will have an equally big say in lighting up the stage and could possibly be the difference maker the side want so desperately in the 2026 World Cup. The 23 year old is coming off his best career return with 21 goals contribution, 10 goals and 11 assists, in 47 matches for Manchester City hitting his full potential at the right time. He has put up his own highlight reel in the Premier League with his incredible pace, trickery and now having the finesse everyone wanted of him. The breakout talent at Rennes also played a key part in Belgium's qualification to the World Cup scoring five goals and providing two assists as the side grabbed the automatic spot. Now an established star for the side and the chance to play a full world cup after playing just 18 minutes in the final group game of the last edition with his nation bidding goodbye early, Doku will be determined to lift his side again and use the tournament to hit  unprecedented levels.

Manager: Rudi Garcia

Despite questions on some of his decisions and tactics, it is no question Rudi Garcia has steadied the ship and removed the dressing room conflict that happened in the last World Cup in the final days of Roberto Martinez era and also when was Domenico Tedesco was in charge when he fell out with Thibaut Courtois regarding captaincy decision. After the Frenchman took the job in January 2025, he integrated the Real Madrid shot-stopper back into the team after he ended his two year exile from the national setup and was not selected by Tedesco for Euro 2024, with the team flowing again focusing on the football on the pitch. Under him, Belgium had a successful qualifying campaign to make it to the 2026 World Cup with no further issues emerging. However, it is left to see how long Garcia keeps everything together in his first managerial role at the international level having not stayed in his business for more than two to three years in his last couple of jobs in club football.

Gone are the days of Vincent Kompany, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, so Belgium had to contain their center-back pairing of Theate and Debast in front of the still undisputed number despite injuries, Thibaut Courtois. There is an interesting competition between Meunier and Timothy Castagne for the right back position but for experience and solidity, the former could be on the manager's books first. However, De Cuyper has made himself as an undisputed starter on the opposite flank. The midfield is hard to predict because of the wealth of options in store. Onana and Tielemans could pair up for a more solid duo whereas Brugge captain Hans Vanaken or Nicolas Raskin of Rangers could come in if more energy, creativity and tactical flexibility is in demand. De Bruyne remains the creative hub for the team with Doku and Trossard, provided De Ketelaere starts up front, igniting the flanks. Rudi Garcia is expected to set his team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation but he has shown flexibility in going to a 4-3-3. The side could be possession heavy during the group stages but can take counter attacking measure as the tournament progresses knowing the raw pace they have on the break with the advantage of bringing in a Dodi Lukébakio late on to tire down defences.

Belgium FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Belgium has been drawn into one of the easiest groups in the 2026 World Cup against three teams who have failed to win a single game in the competition's history. Winning the group should not be a worry for Rudi Garcia's men and even a clean sweep could be possible considering the level of the opposition. It's true that all of the three like to sit back and make it hard for them to break down which this Belgium side had issues with considering their results against North Macedonia and Kazakhstan but they have enough talent to get them over the line. However, the real challenge for the side will come in the knockouts when their unconvincing defence will be tested severely.

Probably not the first two rounds according to their pathway but certainly in the quarterfinals when they are likely to get a Spain or England. While the team is excellent going forward and have a real depth in midfield to have the legs to go deeper into the competition, their backline is expected to let them down as it is nobody's guess what the firepower of those tournament favourites possess and the damage they can inflict. Going beyond the last-eight will be immense for the side if they can pull it off but anything less than reaching the quarterfinals will be considered a huge failure for the team.
