Brazil squad for Copa America 2024

Last edition’s runners-up Brazil are aiming to reach another final of the Copa America and possibly win it for the 10th time with a new generation of footballers. Not having some experienced star names in the squad, the Selecao are desperate to come out of a difficult period in their football history to prove a point in the tournament. Manager Dorival Júnior wishes to lead a new era of talented players after the dismissal of Fernando Diniz to build something positive ahead.

History

Brazil are the third most successful side in Copa America history after Argentina and Uruguay with nine titles. The Green and Yellows have also reached 28 tournament finals and have played the third most matches in the competition. Brazil have scored 430 goals which is bettered only by Argentina but has netted more goals in a single tournament. They have picked up 108 wins. Dubbed by Pelé as the best player he has ever seen, Zizinho is the joint-most goal-scorer in the competition's history with 17 strikes. The attacking midfielder also tops the appearance chart for Brazil in competition history having played 33 matches in six finals.

The major name missing from the list is Neymar Jr who is still recovering from his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered in October last year while with the national team. Brazil’s preferred defensive midfield star in recent years, Casemiro has also not made the cut owing to his form and injury troubles this season. His Manchester United teammate Antony has not been considered either. The main striker option in the 2022 World Cup, Richarlison also misses out with an injury. 17-year-old Endrick will be experiencing his first major tournament after breaking out in the senior national team only this year and earning just two caps so far.

Goalkeeper Ederson of Manchester City pulled out from the main squad after suffering an injury in the penultimate game of the Premier League. Sao Paulo’s Rafael has been named as the replacement.
