Carlos Queiroz Appointed Ghana Football Team Head Coach Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

With less than two months remaining before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, the Ghana Football Association has made a significant managerial change. In an official statement released on Monday, the federation confirmed the appointment of experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Ghana national football team.

A Veteran Returns to the World Stage

At 73, Queiroz is one of the most seasoned figures in international football. His coaching career spans over four decades, during which he has worked at both club and international levels. At the club level, Queiroz notably managed Real Madrid, one of the most successful teams in European football. He also served as an assistant to legendary manager Alex Ferguson at Manchester United across two separate stints, gaining invaluable experience at the highest level of the game.

Proven World Cup Pedigree

Queiroz has built a strong reputation on the global stage, particularly in World Cup competitions. He made his World Cup debut in 2010 as the head coach of Portugal national football team. He then went on to guide the Iran national football team to three consecutive World Cups in 2014, 2018, and 2022. With his new role at Ghana, Queiroz is set to appear in his fifth World Cup—an achievement that places him among the most experienced coaches in the tournament’s history.

Chasing a Historic Record

This appointment also brings Queiroz close to a unique milestone. He is on track to become only the second coach in history to be present in the dugout for five consecutive World Cups. Currently, the record is held by Bora Milutinović, who managed five different national teams at World Cups between 1986 and 2002.

Sudden Vacancy and Swift Decision

The appointment comes just two weeks after Ghana parted ways with former head coach Otto Addo. The decision followed a 2–1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly during the recent break. The abrupt dismissal left the team without a coach just weeks before the World Cup, prompting the Ghana Football Association to act quickly. In its statement, the federation confirmed that Queiroz has already begun preparations to get the team ready for the tournament, which begins on June 11. However, details regarding the length of his contract have not yet been disclosed.

A Truly Global Coaching Journey

Queiroz’s managerial career is not limited to Europe or the Middle East. Over the years, he has coached several national teams, including South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman, showcasing his adaptability across different footballing cultures. However, his most recent stint with Oman national football team ended in disappointment, as he failed to secure qualification for the World Cup. Despite this setback, Ghana’s football authorities have placed their trust in his vast experience.

Queiroz faces an immediate test in the World Cup, where Ghana has been drawn into a challenging Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team. With limited preparation time and strong opposition, the task ahead is daunting. Yet, with Queiroz’s experience and tactical acumen, Ghana will hope to make a competitive impact on football’s biggest stage.
