Chelsea finished 12th in the below half of the Premier League table in the 2022/23 season.

The first full season under the new ownership for Chelsea did not go to plan as the club went through one of its toughest periods in the 2022/23 season. Three managers took the hot seat in one season with Bruno Saltor also behaving as a caretaker for one match but neither could save the downfall. The 12th place finish was rather disappointing after the club splashed a record fee of over $600m in both the transfer windows.

The last manager from Roman Abramovich’s era, Thomas Tuchel got dismissed only a month into the 2022/23 Premier League season. Graham Potter was appointed to the role, buying him from Brighton in September 2023, to align with their viewed project at the club. The Englishman proved unfit for the job but was not sacked until April this year. In his second managerial stint, club legend Frank Lampard was given the charge for the remaining 11 games.

Nine of those matches were in the Premier League with Chelsea managing only one win in that period. The Blues conceded 17 goals in the competition alone, scoring only eight. Hence, the records registered by the club in the 2022/23 season were mostly negative and the ones they would like to improve in the new season.

Chelsea have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their 11 games under Frank Lampard's interim spell in charge. The Blues conceded 21 goals in that period with 17 coming in the Premier League.

Chelsea finished the season with their lowest-ever points tally in the Premier League with 44 and the second-worst in a top-flight league after the 1987-88 season. They managed only 42 at that time and were relegated to the second division. The 12th place is also the lowest league finish since 1993-94 when they ended 14th

This is the first time Chelsea have failed to collect 50 points in a Premier League season. They managed only five points in their final nine games of the season.

The Blues have scored 38 goals and conceded 47 after 38 Premier League games making a -9 goal difference. This is the worst ever recorded by the club in the competition history.

Just Four

Chelsea took just four points against the top six teams in the Premier League table this season. None of the 12 matches ended in a victory for the Blues. They managed to score only six goals and conceded 19 times in those games.

Chelsea had more players making their debut than any Premier League team in this season with 16. Conor Gallagher, Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Carney Chukwuemeka, Denis Zakaria (Champions League), Omari Hutchinson, Bashir Humphreys (FA Cup), David Fofana (FA Cup), Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke. A club record since the 1909 season.
