England vs Ghana FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Preview

England’s 2026 World Cup campaign got off to a resounding start as they sought perfect revenge for their 2018 semifinal elimination with a 4-2 thrilling win over Croatia in the opening Group L game. Golden Boot winner in Russia, Harry Kane, staked an early claim for the prize by scoring twice in the first half, one from a retaken penalty and the other an unmarked header from a corner. He also equalled England’s record goalscorer milestone set by Gary Lineker in the process. The three Lions upped the gear in the second half, with Jude Bellingham scoring early in the restart, clearing any friction that may have existed with Thomas Tuchel, while Marcus Rashford rounded off the victory coming on as a substitute. Although England’s lead was twice cancelled by a quite underwhelming transitioning Croatia team in the first half through defensive mistakes, the response from Tuchel’s men in the second period showed they are quite different from the previous management, which leaned towards shutting up shop rather than going for the kill. Hence, the performance has again rekindled hope that football might come home after all, with the team also ending a miserable nine-game winless run against opposition in the top 15 of FIFA rankings in the tournament, which was put into some doubt after the German coach made bold, unpopular squad selection for the tournament. However, he knows that the job has only just started and the immediate objective for the team will be to secure a knockout qualification, with a game to spare, when they face Ghana in Boston. Here’s the England Records and Stats in FIFA World Cup

While the Black Stars’ victory wasn’t as glamorous as their Tuesday opponents', beating Panama 1-0, courtesy of an unlikely goal source, 20-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi, finding the net just minutes from the end, proved to be crucial. Unlike England, Ghana did not have a coach to build their preparation around for a long time, as, despite helping them to qualify for the finals in North America, former international Otto Addo was sacked after poor performances in the friendlies in March. In his place, former Real Madrid and Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz was appointed just two months before the World Cup. While his debut game for the side ended with a 2-0 defeat to one of the tournament’s co-hosts, Mexico, the 1-1 draw against Wales in friendlies and now this result shows he has stabilised the team a lot. But they are about to face the difficult test yet in the form of a competition favourite who mustered a tournament record 20 shots inside the penalty area, which will be a huge test to Ghana’s solidity and a three-game winning streak. They sit on top of Group L on goal difference and have scored at least three goals in the last two. However, the African nation has a coach in the dugout who has caused numerous issues to the so-called elites at this stage, with equally valued teams like them proving to be dogged defensively. The Black Stars will be pinning all hopes on their Portuguese boss, who is coaching in a joint-record fifth World Cup, to inspire them to a first knockout qualification since 2010 with an upset here. England vs Ghana FIFA World Cup 2026 Team News

England is likely to stick to the eleven that registered such a welcoming victory in their opening game. However, they can change certain personnel to make them more effective in this game. Ezri Konsa struggled a little, starting in his World Cup debut, so Marc Guehi could slot alongside now ex-clubmate John Stones in the backline. On the left wing, Marcus Rashford could replace Anthony Gordon, as he might give a little bit more flexibility against deep defence. Captain Harry Kane will be looking to be the outright record goalscorer for his nation at the World Cup stage in this fixture.

Meanwhile, Ghana are sweating on the fitness of their number one keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who was taken off at half-time against Panama due to physical discomfort. Should he fail to recover, Benjamin Asare will replace him in between the sticks as he did in the second half of the opening game. However, they will have former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey back in the mix after he was denied entry to Canada for the opening game, as he stands to go on trial next year for rape and assault charges. The rest of the team should remain unchanged.

England vs Ghana FIFA World Cup 2026 Predicted Lineups

England vs Ghana FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Prediction

If England doesn’t become complacent about the nature of the opposition on the day and doesn’t crumble from the standards set on the opening day, there is no reason for the Three Lions not to pick up a handsome victory here and seal their place in the Round of 32. While Queiroz managed outfits have snatched points out of teams in the past, he has barely had games to fit Ghana into his philosophy properly. They managed to beat the lowest-ranked nation in the group, Panama, with just a solitary goal and almost came out of the clash with just a point and not three. It could have been a far worse result if Ati-Zigi had not made crucial saves in the time he was on the pitch. Hence, we predict a comfortable England victory here.

FT:  England 2-0 Ghana
