The Premier League has started after a gap of three months. Everton host Liverpool in their opening fixture of the resumed season on Sunday. The Merseyside derby refers to the games between Everton and Liverpool, the two top clubs in Liverpool city. Everton host Liverpool at home on Sunday as they prepare to restart their fight for the European spots. The Toffees sit 12th in the Premier League table with 37 points from 29 games so far. Liverpool is at the top of the table with 82 points from 29 games, 22 points ahead of 2nd placed Manchester City. A win for Liverpool would push them closer to their first league title since the Premier League era. They need just two wins to seal their first league title in 30 years.

Here’s how the last five meetings between both sides panned out:

1. Liverpool 1-0 Everton (FA Cup - Round 3) – 5th January 2020:

Liverpool hosted Everton earlier this year in the 3rd round tie of the FA Cup. Klopp prioritized the Premier League and Champions League and that’s why he deployed a young and different lineup. Everton fielded their strongest lineup. But still, Klopp’s side dominated the game and came out winners thanks to Curtis Jones’ 71st-minute screamer. Everton had three good chances but they squandered all of them.

2. Liverpool 5-2 Everton (Premier League) – 5th December 2019:

Liverpool hosted the Toffees at Anfield in the 15th round of the Premier League. Klopp’s side were unbeaten in their last 31 PL games and were about to set a new club record. Origi opened the scoring for Liverpool early in the 6th minutes as Everton were pounced on a counter. 10 mins later, Shaqiri doubled their lead through a brilliant team goal. Michael Keane scored one back for Everton from Iwobi’s cross. Liverpool scored their third through Origi. Mane made it four before half-time. However, the Toffees scored in the extra time of the first half to make it 4-2. The next 45 mins were pretty quiet but Wijnaldum scored Liverpool’s fifth in the 90th min. Liverpool then went eight points clear at the top.

3. Everton 0-0 Liverpool (Premier League) – 3rd March 2019:

After City’s win against Bournemouth, the pressure was back on Liverpool to grab all three points. Liverpool dominated the game at Goodison Park and created many chances. They played out a draw and City went top of the table. Liverpool dropped 11 points from their last nine games and the advantage in the PL title race returned to Pep’s City.

4. Liverpool 1-0 Everton (Premier League) – 2nd December 2018:

Liverpool came into the game unbeaten in the PL and won their last two games. Liverpool dominated as usual but Everton has two big chances to score but they couldn’t. The game ended dramatically as Origi scored the sole goals of the game in the 96th min. Van Dijk’s volley was misjudged by Pickford and Origi nodded it home to win all three points at Anfield.

5. Everton 0-0 Liverpool (Premier League) – 7th April 2018:

Liverpool came into the derby motivated after winning their first leg against Manchester City in the UCL. Sam Allardyce guided Everton to safety but still, the Toffees were inconsistent throughout the campaign. The derby ended all square as the Reds extended their unbeaten run to 17 games. Pickford was in top form and made two crucial caves to win one point for Everton.
