The FA Community Shield serves as a traditional curtain-raiser for the English football season, with over a century of editions played since its beginning in 1908. It is a one-off final played between the champions of the first division, the Premier League from 1992, and the FA Cup winners. In the case where a club achieves the domestic double, it goes on to face the league runners-up instead. It is regarded as the first competitive game of the campaign played in August each year, normally a week before the league season kicks off.
Aside from 1908 to 1973 and from 2001 to 2004, Wembley Stadium, both the old and the new, has served as the venue for the Community Shield. However, it has been hosted in other venues too. The competition has been played each year since its inception, but it was paused during the World Wars.
Manchester United are the most successful side in the competition, having bagged 21 titles, while they have also played the most finals. The Red Devils are the side to have lifted the Shield by winning the most tie-breakers through penalty shootouts, with six. The Community Shield has mostly had one winner of the title, but on nine occasions it has been shared. Liverpool has won the Shield most times in this manner. From 1993, though, penalties have served as tie-breakers, ruling out any such possibility in the future.
Several times the tournament has been played between teams with assembled squads or guest teams like English Professionals XI, English Amateurs XI, or England World Cup XI to mark special occasions. Since it began, there have been 25 different winners in the FA Community Shield.
