What Happened With Third Place at the 1930 FIFA World Cup?

The inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay remains the only edition that did not feature an official third-place playoff.

The United States and Yugoslavia were eliminated in the semifinals, both losing 6–1. The USA fell to Argentina, while eventual champions Uruguay defeated Yugoslavia. No playoff was held between the two losing semifinalists.

In 1986, FIFA's technical committee reviewed historical World Cup records to establish retrospective tournament rankings. The United States were subsequently listed in third place and Yugoslavia in fourth based on their respective overall tournament records.

Therefore, while the United States are historically recognized as finishing third in 1930, they never actually won a third-place playoff.

France or England Will Join the List Next

The latest chapter in FIFA World Cup third-place history is about to be written, with Kylian Mbappe's France and Harry Kane's England set to battle for the bronze medal.

France have previously finished third in 1958 and 1986, while England have endured three fourth-place finishes, in 1986, 1990 and 2018.

For both nations, the upcoming game represents a chance to recover from the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup final. One will end the tournament with a victory and a bronze medal, while the other will suffer another defeat.

Either way, Mbappe's France or Kane's England will become the latest entry on this special yet unfortunate list of teams that came agonizingly close to the World Cup final but still managed to leave the tournament with a place on the podium.
