Football Fixtures March 2026

Jampacked footballing action is guaranteed in March 2026 as crucial competitions will be held this month, both at club level and internationally. The Champions League enter the main stage of the knockout phase while title deciding clashes and derbies making the defining fixtures in leagues will be a treat to watch. There is a huge battle in the Carabao Cup final as the top two sides in the Premier League go head to head for the first silverware of the season.

However, the main focus of this month is the remaining slots for the 2026 World Cup getting fulfilled as the final teams secure their qualification to the tournament. The inter-confederation playoffs will take place in Mexico as a preparatory tournament for the main event held in three North American countries for the first time. Whereas, the final European teams going into the showpiece this summer will be decided via the pulsating UEFA playoffs.

Here are all the top events to watch in March 2026:

2025-26 Champions League Round of 16

The main stages of the Champions League knockout phase start with the Round of 16, with the top eight teams from the League Phase and the eight playoff winners set to battle it out to qualify for the quarterfinals. Several spicy ties are lined up at this stage, with record winners Real Madrid and 2023 champions Manchester City colliding for the 13th time in a row in the competition. Competition holders Paris Saint Germain take on Liam Rosenior's Chelsea while Liverpool seek revenge against Galatasaray for the defeat in the League Phase meeting earlier. Giant killers Bodo Glimt battles another surprise packages Sporting CP, Vincent Kompany's charismatic Bayern Munich face comeback kings Atalanta and quadruple chasers Arsenal challenge Bayer Leverkusen. The first leg of the Round of 16 will be played on the 10th, 11th and 12th of March 2026, while the second leg will be played on the 17th, 18th and 19th March 2026.

Carabao Cup Final 2025-26

Set to be the most highly anticipated Carabao Cup final for a while, the Premier League's two premium sides, Arsenal and Manchester City will clash heads in the first of the four title deciding matchups possible this season. The Gunners are chasing a historic quadruple and this is the chance for them to add the first silverware in their journey to complete the feat. They are playing their first League Cup final since 2018, when they also faced City but lost heavily 3-0. In fact, the Gunners have tasted defeat in each of their last three appearances at this stage of the competition, with their last glory coming all the way back in 1993. On the contrary, City have been in this stage more recently with this being their fifth final since Guardiola took charge in 2016, eighth time this century. They also set a record equalling Liverpool by winning the Cup four times in a row from 2018 to 2021, being the second most winners in competition history with 10 and have won every showpiece since 1976.

Madrid derby - La Liga 2025-26

The second Madrid derby of the season will hold a lot of stake as Real Madrid face their eternal city rivals Atletico Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu on 23rd March 2016. Los Blancos will be hoping for a victory in this encounter, not just because they are in a close battle with Barcelona for the La Liga title, as three points will allow them to close the gap to the league leaders, but also their crushing 5-2 defeat suffered in the reverse clash, back in September last year. A lot has changed since with the club transitioning from Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa but their form has suffered significantly recently. Real also haven't won against Atletico in Bernabeu since 2021, playing three consecutive draws since then. Meanwhile, Simeone's men haven't tasted success at this venue in a decade while their last derby double over their city rivals came back in 2014-15 season. They will want to create history after looking destined to finish third for consecutive seasons and fourth time in five years. Atletico also struggled with consistency, so this derby is set to be an open affair and could be anyone's game.

2025-26 Women's Champions League Quarterfinal

The quarterfinal stage of the Women’s Champions League is also scheduled in March 2026, with the final eight teams now set. The top four teams in the inaugural League Phase, namely table-toppers Barcelona, record champions Lyon, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, made it directly to the quarterfinals. Whereas, teams ranked fifth to 12th entered the knockout playoffs to determine the remaining four teams making it to the round. Even holders Arsenal had to come through this stage, beating surprise debutants Oud-Heverlee Leuven 7-1 on aggregate, to make it among the last eight. The Gunners will now face their London rivals Chelsea in a cracking all-WSL tie in the quarterfinal.

Similarly, two-time winners, Wolfsburg had to fend off Italian giants Juventus' challenge in the playoffs to land a huge tie against Lyon. On the other side of the bracket, Manchester United, who beat Atletico Madrid 5-0 on aggregate, will face off against German heavyweights Bayern Munich. Rounding off the quarterfinal ties is the game eyes will be peeled on as Barcelona take on their arch rivals Real Madrid, who beat Paris FC 5-2 on aggregate to make it to this stage, for the second El Clásico in Women's Champions League history. Teams that received automatic qualification to the last-eight have the home advantage in the second leg, adding a further layer of excitement. The first legs will be played on 24th, 25th and 26th of March, with the return leg scheduled next month.

Manchester City vs Arsenal - Premier League 2025-26

The biggest game in the Premier League calendar will also be staged this month as struggling challengers Manchester City welcome league leaders Arsenal at Etihad Stadium on 19 April 2026. Guardiola's men have fallen off a cliff as their 1-1 draw against West Ham in gameweek 30 opened up a huge nine points difference with the Gunners. Despite having a game in hand, it looks an extremely tough job for the side to catch up to their title rivals after dropping points against relegation battlers in the previous two games and already face a crunching schedule including requiring a fightback against Real Madrid in the Champions League, take on Arsenal in the League Cup, play the FA Cup Quarterfinal against Liverpool and also face Chelsea before heading to this clash. However, City are City and they have proved to change this around even in the most difficult situations, with a victory in this title decider will surely rekindle hope.

On the flip side, Arsenal will not find themselves in a better position to finally end their long 22-year wait for the Premier League title after the 2-0 win over Everton gave them a comfortable lead at the top to hold onto. Mikel Arteta's men also have a favourable schedule compared to Guardiola's side, facing them in the Cup final after playing the Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen and then proceeding to face Southampton in the FA Cup and Bournemouth in the Premier League before their league clash with them. However, taking City lightly, even with their faltering form and the welcoming lead at the top, could strike back at the Gunners, considering they haven't won at Etihad since 2015, amid sharing points in the last two visits, which won't be a bad result here. All things considered, if Arsenal fails to win the league from here, they have only themselves to blame, so winning the title decider will be on the cards to set them on their way.

Inter confederation Playoffs for the 2026 World Cup

The crucial inter-confederations playoffs will be played in March 2026 with the semifinals scheduled this month on 27th while the two final will be played on 1st April 2026. No UEFA teams are included for the first time. The playoffs will be competed by six teams to take the two group stage slots for the 2026 World Cup later in the summer. There are two pathways in the playoffs with the two highest-ranked teams, DR Congo from CAF and Iraq of AFC, automatically qualifying to the final of their respective pathways, while the four lower-ranked sides, namely Bolivia, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname, require navigating through the semifinal stage. As the tournament is co-hosted by three CONCACAF nations, the host confederation has been given an extra spot in the playoffs this time.

The first semifinal will see Bolivia, who finished seventh in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, grab the inter-confederation playoff spot and take on Suriname, who secured second spot in their group of the CONCACAF final round. Bolivia has played in three World Cups and is hoping to secure their first appearance since 1994, while Suriname is aiming for their first-ever tournament, making this a very interesting matchup set to be hosted in Guadalupe, Mexico. The winners of the semifinal will progress to the final to face Iraq at the same venue. The Lions of Mesopotamia are looking for their second appearance on the global stage after debuting in the tournament back in 1986 and are heavy favourites in this pathway to book a ticket to the competition this year.

The other semifinal involved the second CONCACAF team that also finished second in their Final Round group of their confederation qualifiers, Jamaica taking on the runners-up in the OFC qualifiers final, New Caledonia. Like most of the teams in these qualifiers, the Reggae Boyz are aiming for their second World Cup appearance after 1998 having surprisingly missed out on automatic qualification to Curacao. Meanwhile, if New Caledonia makes it to the finals, it will be their debut in the premier competition. The winners though will face a severe test in the form of DR Congo, who have beaten World Cup regulars like Cameroon and Nigeria to make it to this stage, in the final in Zapopan. The Leopards have one appearance in the World Cup before in 1974 as Zaire and have a huge opportunity now to break their long exile from the competition.

UEFA Qualifying Playoffs for 2026 World Cup

Alongside the inter-confederation playoffs, the highly anticipated UEFA Qualifying Playoffs will take place to decide the final four teams who will join the 12 directly qualified teams to the 2026 World Cup. The 12 runners-up from each qualifying group and the four best-ranked Nations League group winners who failed to finish in the top two of their qualifying group will compete in this playoffs for the World Cup spots. Some big names and tournament regulars stand on the brink of elimination while there could be surprise debutants in the competition at the same time. The semifinals will be held on 26th and 27th of March 2026 with the four finals to be hosted on 1st April 2026.

Hoping to get their first World Cup appearance since 2002, a talented Turkey side will face Romania, aiming for their first appearance since 1998, in the semifinal at home. The winners will travel to either Slovakia or surprise packages Kosovo for the final with both of those teams with the former aiming to go back to the competition they appeared in 2010 while the latter is looking for a dream debut against the odds. Denmark, who surprisingly missed out on automatic qualification, will try their luck against North Macedonia, looking for their World Cup debut, at home in the semifinals and will face Czech Republic or Ireland in the final to make their seventh appearance in the 2026 edition.

Both sides have World Cup experience with semifinal host Czech Republic looking for their second World Cup as an independent nation and first since 2006 while Ireland are looking for their fourth and first World Cup since 2002 after a dramatic turnaround in the qualifiers to make it to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Poland are looking for their third consecutive World Cup appearance welcoming Albania, who want a World Cup appearance after two historical Euro campaigns, in the semifinal. Either Ukraine or Sweden, who qualified due to their Nations League ranking after a forgetful qualifying campaign, will be their opponents in the final with the former seeking their second and the latter their fifth.

However, the conversation around the UEFA playoffs will once again centered around Italy who could miss out on a third World Cup in a row, deepening their crisis. The Azzurri finished behind a marooning Norway team led by a certain Erling Haaland who beat them 7-1 in combined score home and away to finish in the playoff spot again. They will fight a tricky Northern Ireland side at home who are looking for their fourth World Cup in history and first since 1986. Their pathway links with the winners between Wales who host Bosnia Herzegovina in the other semifinal. The Dragons are counting on their chances of making consecutive World Cup appearance after their historical first in 2022 while Bosnia also aims for their second tournament after 2014.
