Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has made Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall their preferred target this summer. However, a deal currently looks difficult, with Newcastle reluctant to lose another important player after already seeing key figures such as Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali depart. Reports have now suggested that Racing Santander youngster Jorge Salinas is among the alternatives being considered by United.
The Spanish left-back is reportedly available for a €16 million release clause and is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has a strong relationship with Manchester United and has been involved in several deals with the club.
With both players emerging as possible solutions, how do Lewis Hall and Jorge Salinas compare?
Lewis Hall: The Premier League-Proven Option
At 21, Lewis Hall already has considerably more experience at the highest level than Salinas. The Newcastle defender made 43 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign and was recognised for his performances with a nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.
Hall’s biggest advantage for Manchester United would be his immediate readiness. He has already adapted to the physical demands and intensity of Premier League football and has established himself as a regular left-back for Newcastle.
Technically, Hall is also well suited to a modern possession-based side. He is comfortable carrying the ball forward, combining with teammates and supporting attacks from deep areas. His ability to operate on either side of the defence also gives him additional tactical value.
For United, that could make Hall more than simply a replacement for an ageing or injury-prone Luke Shaw. He could become a long-term first-choice left-back capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch.
The obvious problem is getting him out of Newcastle. The Magpies have reportedly told United that Hall is not for sale, while recent reports indicate that United continue to prioritise him despite the difficulty of the deal.
Jorge Salinas: The High-Potential Alternative
Jorge Salinas represents a very different type of signing. The Racing Santander defender is only 19 and has emerged as one of Spain’s more intriguing young defensive prospects.
Primarily a left-back, Salinas can also play as a central defender and has represented Spain at youth level in the centre of defence. He was an important player for Racing during their promotion campaign, making a total of 33 appearances.
That positional flexibility could be particularly attractive to United. Salinas would give the club another player capable of covering multiple defensive roles while potentially developing into a long-term starter.
Financially, he is also much easier to pursue. Racing Santander has maintained that his release clause is €16 million, although reports earlier in the summer suggested there had been some uncertainty over whether the figure could vary between €8 million and €16 million.
Salinas is also represented by Jorge Mendes, adding an interesting connection to Manchester United. Recent reports have identified United as monitoring the youngster, although Barcelona are also strongly interested, and Salinas has reportedly favoured a move to the Catalan club.
Hall vs Salinas: Who Would Improve Man Utd More?
The answer depends largely on what United needs immediately.
Hall offers greater certainty. He has Premier League experience, is already accustomed to the demands of English football and has demonstrated that he can perform consistently at a high level. His performances last season showed that he is developing into an excellent modern full-back.
Salinas offers potential and value. At 19, he could develop alongside United’s younger core, while a €16 million clause would make the financial risk significantly lower than pursuing an established Premier League defender. His ability to play centre-back could also provide useful squad depth.
However, Salinas would inevitably require more patience. Moving from Racing Santander to Manchester United would represent a significant jump in quality, pressure and expectations. Hall, meanwhile, could potentially walk into United’s starting XI and immediately improve the position.
Verdict: Manchester United Should Still Push for Hall
Jorge Salinas is an exciting alternative and could eventually prove to be an excellent signing. His age, versatility, potential and relatively affordable release clause make him a very attractive option.
But if Manchester United genuinely have the opportunity to sign Lewis Hall, they should somehow try to get the deal done.
Hall is further along in his development, already understands Premier League football and has the profile to become United’s long-term answer at left-back. Salinas could be the smarter bargain, but Hall looks like the better fit for United’s immediate needs.
The ideal outcome would therefore be for United to keep pushing Newcastle until every realistic avenue has been exhausted. If that fails, Salinas could become an intriguing Plan B, but Lewis Hall should remain the priority.
